Col. Jeff Cooper...A Giant Has Fallen

At the request of the family it is my sad duty to report the passing of our founder, Jeff Cooper. Jeff died peacefully at home this afternoon while being cared for by his wife Janelle and daughter Lindy.

There will be a private internment at Gunsite by invitation, with a public memorial service at the Whittington Center at a date to be announced.

Our thoughts and prayers are with the family.

DVC,

Ed

Rest in peace, Colonel. You will be missed. The world is a warrior short tonight.

When Gunsite was still "orange" the Colonel drove me past his grave site and said he wanted a handle on the inside of the door so he could come out and haunt those who would mash their triggers. Having his hands on mine showing me how to shoot the 1911 was like having Segovia teach you the guitar. I hope he's shooting big bores with Elmer.

Col. Cooper's book, "To Ride, Shoot Straight, and Speak the Truth" will always be on my short list of educational books that would give "educators" a heart attack.

A life well and nobly lived has ended. I sincerely hope that Jeff is enjoying a fine single-malt with Herman Hanneken, Audie Murphy, and Elmer Keith.

No one will ever walk satisfactorily in Col. Cooper's footprints. He was unique. Brilliant, erudite, outspoken, and almost always on target. You didn't always agree with him, but you just had to respect his opinions and the deep font of knowledge which gave them birth. I corresponded with him once on an article I had submitted for publication, and received a personal and thoughtful reply. He was a true gentleman whose likes will not be seen again. May he rest in peace, and may his family find solace in the certain knowledge that he lived a full life, more so than 99 0/0 of the rest of us. Godspeed, Jeff.

Col. Jeff Cooper still lives in those he taught the modern pistol technique.
Most importantly, he stood for something and inspired others to do the same.
