A kerosene lamp is good to have. Lit mine up today when the power went out. One should be prepared to go back to the nineteenth century quickly and easily at any time.
I have replaced my everyday carry light with a Fenix Cree. I has a low power setting that acts like a candle. It lasts a long time. It also has a strobe function, high power, sos. Good light. Surefire has a place for me. But, Fenix is a great all round light.
I always carry my "Micro Mini-Light". It uses one (1) "AA" battery and has an LED bulb. The battery lasts 100 hours, per the spec's and the bulb is rated "indefinite". Bulbs came in red, green, or white, if I remember correctly. It cost $24 at REI, about ten (10) years ago. It always works, is waterproof and comes with a neck lanyard. I use the lanyard, but let the light poke though a slot between buttons on my shirt and then I let it drop into my buttoned cargo pocket. That way, it isn't slapping around on your chest. It has a knurled no-slip finish that can be abrasive, if you know what I mean. It's always handy. No expensive "CR123" Lithium batteries with very short life. No, it aint a combat light, but it does what it's intended for; survival. I've carried mine all over the world and deep into the Canadian bush, on Boy Scout adventures. I highly recommend it. My son, the Eagle Scout, wears one too. Life Member

I mean...the last time I took a flight to work, I had 2 Surefire lights on my person, and the TSA lady made a comment about it...
