Q: Should people have access to buy assault weapons?Yep, we're out there all alone again...I was going to write something a lot more harsh, but instead I think I'm going to reach out to Steele and see if I maybe salvage something here.
A: Society should draw lines. What do you need an assault weapon for, if you're going hunting? That's overkill. But I don't think that means you go to a total ban for those who want to use gun for skeet shooting or hunting or things like that But what's the point of passing gun laws if we're not going to enforce them? If you want to talk about gun control, that's where you need to start. We've got 300 gun laws on the books right now. At the end of the day, it's about how we enforce the law.

Republicans Sell Us Out...Again!
So Michael Steele is the new head of the disoriented, destroyed, debunked Republican Party. And what does he have to say about the issues that's #1 on our gun rights radar? This from the Examiner:
FORGET IT ....YOU ARE NOT GOING TO GET ANYWHERE WITH STEELE! SORRY!
ReplyDeleteWouldn't it be great if you had a cadre you could call on now? A thousand stalwart men and women to shout to Steele that enough is enough. Sadly MB you will have to do it alone.
ReplyDeleteWell, since I vote for individuals and not parties, this means little to me. Except, the RNC shall not see a dime from me. And, I will be suggesting that my Republican representatives join the Libertarian party. I truly believe we are seeing the death of the Republican party. The party shall soon (4-8 years) dissolve. It will just be a question of which parties shall draw the votes of the membership. It is either this, or the slow death of freedom in the USA.
ReplyDeleteI agree with Tim. The Republican party is now becoming, or already is, like the so-called conservative party in the U.K.- the Torries.
ReplyDeleteThe real conservatives are probably going to go to the Libertarian party. I have been thinking of doing this for some time, though I do not agree with their position on the legalization of drugs.
I'll make a prediction: the Republican party will not nominate someone like Sarah Palin in 2012. They will search, in vain, to find an Obama-lite candidate.
If I was Sarah Palin, I would think twice before running in the party unless I got full, unconditional support from the leadership.
I was extremely disappointed with the choice of Mr. Steele. I saw an article yesterday about his appointment and it said it was because he was the most "moderate" republican. Apparently, the RNC thinks their salvation lays in becoming democrat lite. It pains me to see them being so stupid and sowing their own seeds of destruction.
ReplyDeleteWhoa, I think it's time to calm down on this news. The head of the RNC has nothing to do with setting policy or pushing legislation. It is a role that's more about infrastructure and fund raising. If you look at his own campaign for Senate a few years ago, I think it's promising that he tried several out-of-the-box messages and techniques. The Republican brand could use a few fresh ideas.
ReplyDeleteAgain, this has nothing to do with policy. That's not the role of the RNC.
Political parties start out with great ideas and leadership then after several generations things get diluted and the original ideas compromised. The new leaders lack backbone to stand for basic founding principles. Instead they become more concerned with "maintaining" the organization.
ReplyDeleteMichael ...
ReplyDeleteMaybe you could explain to him that the shooters that deep sixed Bush Mk1 and Clinton are NOT fuddites.
They buy AR-15s, not bolt-action rem-chesters.
If you try to buy the gun vote by appealing to hunters, you will not get the gun vote.
Has anyone told this guy that "assault weapons" are NOT "assault rifles"? Or that the '94 AWB did nothing to machine guns, which are still legal in about 40 states (after the paperwork).
ReplyDeleteSteele seems to be a "victim" of media bias just like good people we all know. Maybe if we can get Nugent and Zumbo to give key RNC members some trigger time we can win over a few friends.
Bitter is right. It would be nice if Steele were a little smarter, but obviously he's just a figurehead. Figureheads aren't paid to think.
ReplyDeleteOur best strategy is to work to elect right-thinking-acting Republicans at the local, state and congressional levels. That is where the fight will be won or lost over the next two years.
I have just sent the following email to Steele:
ReplyDeleteDear Mr. Steele,
I voted for you for Senate a couple years ago and I supported your bid to become RNC Chairman. I always thought you were right on gun issues.
Therefore, I was shocked and horrified to read this about you today:
http://www.examiner.com/x-1417-Gun-Rights-Examiner~y2009m2d1-The-riddle-of-Steele
This is NOT what I had in mind. If Republicans--especially those in leadership positions such as yourself--are going to support or even tolerate additional gun control of any kind, we might as well fold the party's tent and all go home right now.
I will not be contributing to the RNC or to any Republican candidate for any office if this is going to be the Party's official position.
Please reconsider this and get back to me on this, so I can spread the word on the gun rights boards on the internet as soon as possible. If the Republicans are not going to support us, we need to pull completely out of the party and organize something else starting as soon as possible.
Bitter,
ReplyDeleteHe's the $ man. With statements like those he crapped out you think they should get a dime from ANY gun owner? When the democrats drags us further and further their direction WHERE is the middle? When the republicans push us towards the democrats why bother with them?
Where has "moderation" got us? A fair distance down the road to hell, good intentions, desire of power, or incompetence make no difference as we have been walking that road for some time now.
No bailouts for republicans! Let them fail! All you are doing Bitter is propping up a failure.
Moderation in temper is always a virtue; but moderation in principle is always a vice. -Paine
Bitter, I tend to agree with Hairy Hobbit. If Steele is the fund raising person, how will he ever raise funds from people that he obviously doesn't support? Others may contribute and feel betrayed, if he turns to support us. None of this will be good for the party.
ReplyDeleteSince the leader DOES set the tone for how things work and what issues the party supports, I conclude that the Republican Party is doomed if Steel doesn't come around. Steele is the "leader". He has a lot to learn about "black guns" and their use, as Zumbo did(or should have). I don't think that he will accept what he learns and may pretend to, just to save his job. Where have we seen that before? With that, his heart won't be in it and that will show through. We'll get sold out again.
Since the Rights guranteed in the Constitution are very important to this community and the fact that there is an impending assault coming to our rights to free speech, we need to keep the 2A linked to it, or we bolt.
If it isn't the Libertarian Party, how about the sometimes talked about Nationalist Party, or how about we form an "Individual Rights Party"?
I suggest a letter writing campaign to Steele, encouraging that he sit down with Michael Bane, then the NRA, to discuss the issue!

1. I agree with MB, his (Steele's) comments show a less-than-complete understanding of guns, and by extension, us. Plan A should be education.
ReplyDeleteAlso, some of your Eastern conservatives aren't familiar with guns, and think they should support -some- gun control from a 'support law enforcement' perspective. Let's get him the information he needs, then judge him.
2. Steele was a natural for RNC chair, a failed candidate who it would profit us to remain in public view. That's how Howard Dean got the DNC job. Lets face it, the Center swung the election, and that's where we need to start winning folks over. A bland, likable guy like Steele will make a good 'greeter.'
