Anyway had a wonderful time at the match today, and the .44s perked right along. I got lots of comments to the effect of, "Got enough powder in those bad boys, Wolf Bane?" The first stage, I thought that feels weird...then I realized it was recoil! Okay okay...not that much recoil, but more than a .38 Super IPSC gun...
I'm going to spend some time this fall getting reacquainted with recoil, I promise. I want to put a few thousand rounds of .44 Magnum downrange and get fully comfortable with the round again. Back in my impetuous youth I launched enough hot .44s to give me semipermanent carpel tunnel, homage to Elmer Keith and all. I thought 240-grain JHPs were fun...I figure if there's a chance I get to Africa with a .44 handgun, I want to have it dialed in pretty good in my own head.
Ha! Wolf Bane! That's a wonderful name.
ReplyDeleteReminds me of a poem I read as a kid about the old "Wolfman" movie...
"Even a man who is pure at heart
And says his prayers by night...
Can become a wolf when the wolfsbane blooms
And the autumn moon is bright!"
I hadn't thought about that in years!
Ah, the joys of hand cannons. I used to love stuffing as much H-110 as possible behind a 300 gr hard cast lead... the good ol' days...
ReplyDeleteYeah, when I shoot CAS (as Thaddeus Muckenfuss) I alway shoot .45 Colt...not full house loads but definitely not mouse fart loads either. Usually about 7 gr Unique with a 200 gr LFN. Why shoot unrealistic rounds...I'm just competing against myself.

ReplyDeleteUnique is black powder?
Sorry, I couldn't resist. ;-)
HMMM, I thought my 8.1 grains of unique and a 255 LRNF were pretty mild.
ReplyDelete7 grains of unique and a 200 grain bullet IS a mouse fart load for the cartridge.
MB, what do you plan on bagging with the 44 mag?
Please don't tell me you are carrying it as backup so you can stop the charging cape buffalo when your big bore rifle takes a dump on you!
Wish that I could put a few thousand rounds of anything down range!
