Hero!

From Times Online UK:
A police officer and mother of one was hailed a heroine yesterday after it emerged that she almost single handedly ended the massacre at America’s biggest military base.

Kimberly Munley does not look as if she would be much of a match for a heavily armed US soldier on a murderous rampage. But the slightly built 34-year-old civilian officer was first on the scene after Major Nidal Malik Hasan began firing on comrades at Ford Hood in Texas as they prepared to deploy to Afghanistan and Iraq. The 39-year-old psychologist killed 13 and left 31 others with serious injuries.
She took the fire and she placed the hits...that is the definition of hero.

Meanwhile, numerous outlets are reporting that the gun used by the shooter was an FN Five-seveN 5.7 X 28.

Alphecca has an excellent update.

The hero apparently attended an "active shooter" response school in San Marcos TX. See

Looks like another case of a gun free zone becoming a baited field. Thank God she was there and been trained in Active shooting scenarios. This training is now being done in almost all LE agencies. Goes to show anything can happen anywhere and at anytime so be ready.
She is a credit to her agency and all the people who protect us daily. Let us not forget and pray for those injured and killed

May God bless her and her family with a speedy recovery! She deserves much more than a ribbon or a medal!

Already the news reports are trying hard to stain her image. On MSNBECILE even MOH winner Jack Jacobs was talking of "friendly fire" and how no "lone gunman" could do this. I'm sure they will also try the "joe the plumber" stuff on her. Let's hope she's paid all her taxes.

  10. Do you suppose the shrink will plead insanity?

I'm surprised al Queda hasn't taken credit for him - then again, they're probly embarrassed that he couldn't quite get to the 70 virgins.

Thanks to Ms. Munley, heroine of the day, he'll have to settle for being somebody else's virgin for a stretch.

The term "hero" has been used so much since 9/11 when referring to cops/firermen/military, etc that the term has become cheapened.

Until I read more about the circumstances I will reserve judgement if this lady is a hero or someone who was doing their, admittedly dangerous, job.

A hero goes above and beyond.

The cop and civilian (I can't think of their names now) who climbed the tower to put an end to the shooting spree by the killer on the university campus were hero's who went above and beyond, as an example.

Let's not cheapen the term by using it too freely. Again, this lady may qualify, I just don't have enough details to make that judgement at the moment.

  12. Anonymous - Perhaps you could forgive us a little emotionalism at a time like this. I would agree that too often the word "tragedy" is misused, and that too often we abuse such words as "hero" and "evil," when it suits us. But this is hardly a place for the language police.

We share our thoughts here as friends, not for the record.

  14. Ok, Anon (couple posts up), you're a bit harsh. Eye witness account:

    http://www.freerepublic.com/focus/news/2380425/posts?page=61

"One of the first responders, she exited her car and entered the building as shots rang out. She rounded a corner, identified the shooter, and fired four times. He returned fire and hit her at least twice in the legs and once in the arm. She underwent surgery Friday but is said to be in good condition. It's unclear how many other responders were present and firing, but Munley's shots are believed to be the ones that stopped the alleged gunman, Army psychiatrist Maj. Nidal Malik Hasan."

She may have been "just doing her job" but it sounds like she put herself on the line to stop the threat. In my book, she's a hero.

  19. Another report for Anon.

Sergeant Munley — a woman with a fierce love of hunting, surfing and other outdoor sports — bolted from her car, yanked her pistol out and shot at Major Hasan. He turned on her and began to fire. She ran toward him, continuing to fire, and both she and Major Hasan went down with several bullet wounds, Mr. Medley said.

Yup. Just doin' her job. And a thankless one at that due to people like Anon above.
