Thanks!

Thanks for all the info on scopes and mounts! I'm kinda excited about setting up the FAL with the little Millett. I'm looking at the GG&G Orr the LaRue mount. I'm thinking I need the shorter mounts rather than the 1.50 inch AR standard? What height mounts have you guys used?

Will be working on TBD all next week, so I'm trying to get everything else taken care of this week. Would like to get in some time at the range, but it's a crap shoot this week.

I strongly urge you to read Tam's excellent post on "Big Boy Rules." It's controversial, and I agree 100%. In fact I've written and blogged about this issue extensively. My biggest criticism is that training classes run under so-called "Real World" rules is that the whole basic premise is fatally (and that's literally) flawed. Training is never, and cannot be, the Real World, and students who think they've experienced a "taste" of the chaos of a violent confrontation are setting themselves up for disaster if they actually stumble into a Real World Condition Red situation. When the SHTF, it's an absolute mastery of the basics combined with mental flexibility that will save your butt.

Think about it.

You know better than most that it will depend on what primary positions you are going to shoot from (prone vs. run and gun for instance). Your particular head placement on the stock, the bell on the scope, etc. But I figured that with the old 30 something mm bell 12x Redfield scope I had, the GG&G added about a half inch of height and then I got the LOW Burris rings (looking them up now they were 1/4") and it worked out ok for me. Bell just clears the picatinny rail. But I only wanted it for prone. And didn't need any co-witnessing of iron sights. With rings I wind up buying two variants in height and returning one usually.

Woops finger check ... I just miked the setup I have. The Burris rings are 3/4" in height (the HIGH rings on Burris site). Measured from top of GG&G QD mount rail to bottom of scope tube. The rail is just shy of half inch (.45). So the rig comes out at 1 inch in height. Still short of the "std" riding high AR setup. But it is sitting on top of the receiver picatinny rail and that adds some height. So its probably a wash. Sorry about that.

  3. Just a couple weeks ago or so a St Joe mo. Police officer shot and killed another officer in a training accident. They were using simulation ammo and when they took a lunch break, changed to real ammo, forgot that and resumed training. Training is already dangerous enough.

  5. One of the reasons I've gone to 100% Airsoft for THE BEST DEFENSE sims. Not as realistic, but we're not going to kill anyone, either. Several people are killed every year from stupid mistakes with sim ammo. Plus the fact that I have my quota of bruises.

Larry, no prob. The irons on the FAL are right on the axis of the barrel, like a bolt gun. Co-witnessing is out of the question of course, but a QD still buys me access to the irons (crappy though they are). I have a email into LaRue asking their opinion...

    M.B.,
I would highly recommend the Larue mounts. Especially if you want to assure return to zero if you take the mount and scope off for iron sight use.
I run the DMS-1 on a Ruger 556 with the Larue 1.5". Yank it on and off a lot to use the Troy sights.
For your Fal, look at the Larue LT-158.

    Or the LT-111.

Both are designed for the longer ranges of 7.62 platforms!
    Good Luck!

Mr Bane I used a Sight Unit Infantry Trilux (SUIT L2A2) British Scope On my FN-FAL Para (Metric) I had to buy an additional Dust cover and have a gunsmith Swap the Mount over from the Inch pattern Top Cover. But it works Great

  8. Ya know ... that would work for any scope.

Get a second dust cover and put a rail on that.
