...spent today with Colt's baseline AR with the 1-piece upper receiver and M1913 forward rail, fitted with Trijicon optics...again, no complaints. They ran and ran and ran and shot just fine. We did one of the outdoor simulators — essentially trails through deep washes — tonight. I used a suppressed AR fitted with a SureFire 400 weapon mounted light/laser. At the suggestion of Gunsite Rangemaster Ed Head, I left the light/laser on for the pitch dark run. Ed's rational for leaving the light on comes from his career in the Border Patrol...that's the tactic he felt worked the best, and he's been in a lot more pitch black washes than I have. I didn't use the sights at all...just the laser. Took a spec of getting used to, but it was a fast way to identify, then acquire, the targets. We also had non-suppressed ARs with Crimson Trace vertical foregrips with red or green lasers. The bright green lasers were a big hit for night work.
I made arrangements today to purchase the Rail Gun I shot. My rationale was that the Colt shot extremely well, functioned flawlessly and — the ultimate subjective judgement — felt right. I'm going to lose the 3-dot sights, probably with a Sharpie taken to the rear dots, and I may also lose the off-side ambi safety...more of an annoyance to me than a useful tool. I also got a Galco kydex IWB fitted for the Rail Gun.
I'll have a full report on DRTV as soon as I get the gun.
My take overall is that Colt is back to stay. I talked with executives and engineers, and they're really excited with the current product line and its extensions for 2011. I was also impressed that they were looking for any improvements we could suggest.
We should have video up tomorrow AM on DRTV on the weekly video podcast...check it out.
I'm rolling on to Columbia, MO, but Marshal Halloway is staying to cover the new .308 Colt rifle...again, videos up ASAP.
What Galco IWB did you get? I've got a Para Nite Tac w/ rail and I'm having a time finding a good IWB holster for it.
ReplyDelete"Colt is back to stay". I'll believe that when I see it. Colt has been mismanaged for decades. It's hard to turn that around.
ReplyDeleteMichael,
ReplyDeleteI hope they give serious consideration to reviving the Colt Python revolver. That revolver is very popular now that it has been discontinued. I believe bringing it back sends further emphasis they are going to focus more on the consumer.
IF they are honestly looking for advice, I second what George said. I would mortgage portions of my anatomy for a NIB Python that hasn't changed hands a dozen times. And, heaven forbid, if they in the groove with S&W's tacticool revos like the TRR-8, only Python style, that would be too awesome for words.
ReplyDeleteIn the last bunch of years, Colt has been making the best guns they've made in decades. The 6920 is still the standard against which all duty quality AR's are judged, and the 1911's coming out of their shop now are really, really nice guns. I just wish they were a little more available. Colt's doing good things.
ReplyDeleteare you telling us Colt has decided they actually want to sell to civilians now or are they still stuck on stupid with their LE and Governement only sales policy????
ReplyDeleteYeah, Anonymous @ 5:21's question is the only one that I care about for (yawn) Colt.
ReplyDeleteIs there any way they can cross develop with S&W so they can put an internal lock on that Python? Now that would be cool !
ReplyDeleteNo more damned locks on revolvers!
ReplyDeletePLEASE!!!
Add me to the Python list...and what about bringing back the Detective Special in .357Mag?...we have a shortage in good, six-shot snubbies out her.....
ReplyDeleteBTW, Michael...how did that Rhino shoot?...can't find your review anywhere....
hey Michael,
ReplyDeleteWould you please tell us more about the Colt chambered in .308?
Is it an AR style rifle?
Or a bolt action?
If it is an AR, can you tell us what kind of mags it is going to use?
I was eyeballing the Rock River "AR" in .308 because it uses extremely inexpensive surplus FAL or G3 mags.
It seems like everbody else's .308 "AR" uses expensive proprietary mags.
Thanks!
Your blog is so excellent that I like it very much, you must be good at writing.
