Impending ATF Letter on Shotguns

As I tweeted, ATF refused to talk to me about next week's letter on shotguns...as we also tweeted, yesterday PM they moved against Taurus on the 28-gauge Raging Judge revolver and the Rossi .410 "mare's leg" style carbine. Neither of the Taurus guns are in production, so the ATF move essentially prohibits production of those guns as anything other than, I believe, an AOW Controlled weapon, with the paperwork and $5 tax.

The speculation is that next week's letter will address Saiga box magazine-fed shotguns. Those shotguns are increasingly popular in 3-Gun competition, and because of that growing popularity there are more capacity options than ever before, including drum-style mags. That makes the Saiga system dangerously close to the old "Street Sweeper" style shotguns tha ATF in a frenzy of antigun furor classified as a "Destructive Device." Of course the Street Sweeper was every bit as much if a "Destructive Device" as a Winchester 1897 pump, but remember, antigunner's plan is to "get what they can get."

I suspect that with the new gun control initiatives in Congress Obama has begun to loosen up the leash on hi regulatory dogs ,

I figured the 28 gage Judge would cause the alarms to sound.

    -Sigh.

FIgures ATF would be used when the votes for regulation and restriction aren't there.

  2. Somebody needs to write a good letter for us to send to Congress and the Senate members who might support our cause and oppose this gungrab. I am not good at that writing, but once I have one I can personalize it. What we have to do is fight every little powergrab the victim disarmament movement tries.

if it is about Saiga shotguns, that will be a real shame because there is good money into converting them over for 3 gun use. That"s money that puts people to work and provides income in this economy. the BATF should be looking at lessening restrictions. it would put Americans to work, and stoke the entrepenuerial fires. two things we desperately need both of in this country.

Pay careful attention to Barry's State of the Union address this week. Some anti's are calling for him to use the occasion to ask Congress to pursue "common sense" gun laws like the AWB, drug and mental testing for gun owners, etc.

  6. Along the lines of NJ_Larry, take a look at today's (1/23/11) NY Times "Week In Review" section. They have two editorials on guns.

The first is from their editorial staff that calls for more, and pay attention to this, "gun safety" laws. They are changing the terms now. And they advance the old need-based argument, requiring us to "justify" to them why we need "high capacity clips".

The second editorial comes from a group called the "Third Way". They advocate an even more sinister plan by co-opting our arguments by changing the debate to focus on the people. The acknowledge that the American people will not support a ban on guns but they might support other other measures. What measure do the think are a good idea? Anyone on the "terrorist watch list" can not buy a gun, anyone who has been diagnosed with a mental problem (no due process but a simple diagnosis buy a gun-hating psychiatrist) and several others.

I encourage everyone to pickup this issue up and read for yourself. Stay tuned and have your senator and congressional reps office numbers on your speed dial.

I wonder if the Taurus/Rossi products might be less useful as a production firearm and more useful as a court case to loosen up NFA'34....
