"Shoot Me First" Vests

Miguel over at the Gun Free Zone has an excellent post on the myth of a "shoot me first" vest. I've always though that particular canard was wildly overplayed. I'm sitting here at Denver International waiting for yet another connection (today is Travel Casualty Day) and looking around right now I see 3 people in vests -- they don't look like photographers,, fly fishermen or contractors. Instead, they just look like poor pathetic travelers who need the extra pockets.

Since I tend to wear t-shirts and shorts for the 3 days I'm at home in the summer, I like vests. And, yeah, you do look like a dork!

Where I live, there are a lot of touristy types dreesed in a manor of gear. I would be hard presses to say who was carring whether it be a vest, fanny pack, or Hawaiian shirt, let alone the mall ninjas and the tactical wannabes. In the past I have mistakenly been "made" by the local police "packing" my cell phone under my untuked shirt tail.

  2. I think that line of thought really overestimates the tactical line of thought of most criminals. Personally, I like me some Hawaiian shirts, but I'd wear a vest if I had a need for one. Pretty soon Hawaiian shirts are going to become the next "shoot me first" ensemble.

  4. Were they 80's style photog vests?

Coming into the gun world in the early '90s, my understanding of the "shoot me first vest" wasn't that it was just a vest, but specifically the khaki vest worn pretty much exclusively (at teh time) by actual photographers, news men on assignment and gunnies who needed the pockets for teh spare mag, spare flashlight and mirror for peeking around corners.

Outdoor hippy fleece and miracle non-"safari jacket without sleeves" style vests with only two or three pockets don't count.

That pretty much sums it up.

Any time I see a fagbag - sorry, fanny pack, I automatically think gun. If saw someone in Phx in the summer wearing a vest I would just think IDIOT. That guy is going to be unconscious in about 15 minutes, it's just too freakin' HOT.
Personally, I don't think you can judge CCW apparel at an airport esp. in Denver...

  7. I wear a fanny pack with a 1911 and i think it is a canard that that is bad.. but what do i know?; i also wear socks with my sandals too, another fashion Phopah... but that is about the only way you can wear sandles in Maine, especially in the winter...

I would be interested to know how many folks wearing a fanny pack have been "shot first".. anybody ever heard of that happening or is it just "common knowledge" of those that carry? Not convinced bad guys will even notice when their adrenaline is pumping...

Tactical for me is what fits me comfortably and is tactful for a fat guy. Actually I am not that fat but I am can sometimes be tacty in dress ie: white socks with dress shoes, etc. I carry in the warm months in my pocket. If that pocket is in a vest so be it.

  9. Yep, DamDoc pretty much nailed it. I think most people that carry fall into the syndrome of "I know, so everyone must know". It's hard to understand that not everyone knows you have a piece of steel on your hip.

  10. Yeah...dont know what I look like....I have a summer vest and a cold weather vest...my back problems, precludes me from wearing a tight belt and loading down my low back with stuff in my pants pocket...it is suspenders(and a loose belt for carrying sundry items) or elastic gym shorts or sweats for me.

When the wife and I go to the local stores, I am often complimented on my vest and flirted with by the store clerkette ladies...so I believe I look pretty cool in my vest...and the wife wishes I didnt look quite so cool....

and yeah it it pretty good for concealed carry to boot....not in the vest though I sometimes do carry in the pocket...but the vest I use are low enough to cover a belt pistol
