There's always that one person who gets a toter's permit and seems a little, well, Barney Fife about it. Now they're a sheepdog! They run scenarios past you:
"What if you're in a convenience store, and you see a guy in a hoodie with his hands in his pockets, looking around at the security cameras?"
"I leave."Definitely read the whole thing! Reminds me of my later years in a dojo when newbies would start with the "what if you're sitting in a bar?" meme, and they were always so disappointed when I said I'd get up and leave. Then I'd patiently (or sometimes not so patiently) explain that it was not a question of who could kick who's ass, but rather the indisputable fact that any violent encounter was a pure chaos event...once it starts, none of the participants have any idea where it's going. There are simply too many factors acting on the system for us to predict its direction with any success, and the whole process if full of anomalies, black swans and just plain weird s&^t.
Once we're in a chaos event, our survival depends on our mental flexibility, our ability to respond, to shift directions, morph tactics, to read the wind, whatever. Go back and reread Bruce Lee's Tao of Jeet Kune Do and The Art of War (this is my favorite translation). One of the greatest unseen dangers we as trained civilians face is the belief that we can drive the event. We think that if we are inside the aggressor(s)' decision-making loop, we are in control of the situation. And we may be, for a second or so. We need to fix firmly in our minds the sense that the clock is always running! The longer a chaos event runs, the more factors acting on the system, the greater the uncertainty. Our mindset as trained, armed civilians must always be on ending the threat. And to that I would add as quickly as possible. Removing ourselves from the scene ends the threat as certainly as a bullet. We're always looking for that option, but if we have to use a bullet we do so with the absolute certainty that we are in the right, that the bullet was the last option our aggressors left us.
As I've said before, I don't think the Florida case is the "poster child" for gun control that our enemies think it is...I think the local police are perfectly capable of sorting out what happened without the help of Eric Holder's Department of (Racial) Justice, POTUS, Al Sharpton, the Nation of Islam, the Brady Bunch, Snowplow Bloomberg, a million misguided people in hoodies, the Huffington Post and the rest of the freak show that's currently spinning up. To be sure, what happened in Florida was a tragedy, but before we throw the rope over the tree limb we ought to know what really happened.
"before we throw the rope over the tree limb we ought to know what really happened."
ReplyDeleteTrue that, Mr. Bane.
"To be sure, what happened in Florida was a tragedy, but before we throw the rope over the tree limb we ought to know what really happened."
ReplyDeleteSadly, I think that those who say that this thing has become so politicized that we'll never know what really happened are right. :(
The same media types that rushed to 'understand' and even defend Major Nidal Hasan (who murdered 13 and wounded 26 while yelling Allah Akbar), aren't so understanding of Zimmerman.
ReplyDeleteI believe this event is an unplanned act of convenience for politicans and community organizers to utilize for their own purposes. The rhetoric is at such a point that if the truth deviates even slightly from the rhetoric truth will not be tolerated in the media.
ReplyDeleteThis irresponsibility on the part of politicians and organizers will, without doubt, fan the flames of hatred and discontent. I believe these rhetorical acts are purpose built to stimulate unrest and even riots to meet both polticial and personal goals and agenda.
Summer 2012 is going to be long, hot and dangerous.

ReplyDeleteA year or so ago, it was "Sarah Palin puts crosshairs on a map and Jared Loughner is inspired to shoot someone".
ReplyDeleteNow it's "Florida allows citizens to not run and hide and a racially-motivated shooting happens".
I'll give the media and professional left (but I repeat myself) credit: They are definitely consistent.
I'm looking forward to the Wednesday podcast and your more thorough take on this, Michael.
ReplyDeletePrepare for the riots... If they find him innocent - oh boy - look out. I predict there will be riots if the current Emporer of the US is not re-elected, as well. One person said in our office one day that "anyone who doesn't vote for B.O. has to be a racist." Well, being who I am, I could never be called a racist by anyone. I've held the opinion that organized (or not) protests are launching points for riots.
ReplyDeleteIt's about to get nasty...
Great blog article, I especially enjoyed the reminder of all fights being a chaos event.
ReplyDeleteI once knew a martial arts instructor who, when advising students to stay out of fights if possible, said that when you get in a fight, your survival clock starts ticking. The longer you're in the fight, the less your chance of surviving.
I also agree with Mr. Robert above. I think we might see some social unrest before this is all over.

ReplyDeleteGood article on the facts...
Years ago I was sitting at a table with some friends in a bar. There was a group of guys at the bar that started to fight and they flipped onto the next to us. Before I knew it I was on the floor with someone holding my foot. I kicked hard got my foot loose & got the hell out of there. A little while later after the police showed up most of the people who didn't leave when I did were arrested and most had to pay for repairs along with an arrest record. Leaving BEFORE something starts is the best policy.
ReplyDeleteDon't really know what happened in Florida & we may never know. But the morons who speculate come out of the woodwork are constant as the day is long.

Kind of reminds me of when the Atlanta Journal Constitution and others in the media falsely convicted the late Richard Jewell concerning the Olympic Park bombing back in 1996 and ended up paying for it. but his life was never the same after that. Mr. Zimmerman should be keeping a list of potential defendants to turn over to a legal team in the future....
ReplyDeleteI will agree with Rastus.
ReplyDeleteWasn't there a school shooting just a few weeks ago, in say Ohio?
It seemed like it didn't get much traction in the media, and the gun control angle probably just wasn't working for them.
My guess is the Martin/Zimmerman thing happened before the school shooting.
There were some folks in the mainstream media who knew about both events, but went to send up the school shooting as a trial balloon, or bait.
nobody took it, so they went to plan B which was to play up or hype up this Martin Zimmerman incident.
If you mess up, it's not your parents' fault, so don't whine about our mistakes,
