HO HO HO From the Secret Hidden Bunker!

A HOWLING MERRY CHRISTMAS FROM THE SECRET HIDDEN BUNKER!

I heard the bells on Christmas Day
Their old, familiar carols play,
And wild and sweet
The words repeat
Of peace on earth, good-will to men!

And thought how, as the day had come,
The belfries of all Christendom
Had rolled along
The unbroken song
Of peace on earth, good-will to men!

Till ringing, singing on its way,
The world revolved from night to day,
A voice, a chime,
A chant sublime
Of peace on earth, good-will to men!

Then from each black, accursed mouth
The cannon thundered in the South,
And with the sound
The carols drowned
Of peace on earth, good-will to men!

It was as if an earthquake rent
The hearth-stones of a continent,
And made forlorn
The households born
Of peace on earth, good-will to men!

And in despair I bowed my head;
"There is no peace on earth," I said;
"For hate is strong,
And mocks the song
Of peace on earth, good-will to men!"

Then pealed the bells more loud and deep:
"God is not dead, nor doth He sleep;
The Wrong shall fail,
The Right prevail,
With peace on earth, good-will to men."

— Henry Wadsworth Longfellow, written during the Civil War

  2. Michael.....

    How ironic... I've had "Bell's on Christmas Day" laid by for several days, ready to recite at the family gathering tomorrow. You beat me to it my friend....but I shall prevail.

    This will follow as the Blessing:

    "When the song of the angels is stilled,
    when the star in the sky is gone,
    when the kings and princes are home,
    when the shepherds are back with the flocks,
    then the work of Christmas begins:
    to find the lost,
    to heal those broken in spirit,
    to feed the hungry,
    to release the oppressed,
    to rebuild the nations,
    to bring peace among all peoples,
    to make a little music with the heart…

    And to radiate the Light of Christ,
    every day, in every way, in all that we do and in all that we say.
    Then the work of Christmas begins."

    We'll be thinking of you..... May the Lord Bless you and keep you, D & M, and may His Light shine upon you all your days".

  7. I remember reading that he wrote the poem shortly after receiving word that his son had died of wounds received at Gettysburg.
    That would tend to sour one's outlook on "peace on earth, goodwill to men."
