Update on Projects
Thought you guys might like to see the progress on my Ruger Mk IV — the grips have been changed from the target grips to a standard set from ShopRuger, a rail has been mounted and the C-More bolted into place. I just started shooting it, and I'll fill you in on accuracy details, hopefully this afternoon after my fun and exciting appointment with the dentist!
On other projects, the Ruger American Ranch Rifle in .450 Bushmaster is definitely going with us to Ox Ranch in Texas for an episode of SHOOTING GALLERY (Shooting tanks and shooting hogs, c'mon! What could be cooler?). Right now it's fitted with a Leupold VX-Hog 1-4X, but I have a sneaking suspicion that a Nightforce NXS 1-4X is in my future!
As I mentioned on Facebook, I am going to tentatively pass on the Ruger GSR in .450 Bushmaster, although it is a beautiful rifle and very true to Jeff Cooper's concept of "Thumper." I've just had a flood of "non-standard" guns/cartridges over the last few months — my .338 Federal Scout and Wilson AR-10, the .458 SOCOM Wilson Combat I built, the .50AE Desert Eagle and the .450 Bushmaster — and a mixed lot of guns coming through the Bunker, so I'm already behind. Besides, now that I've "dialed in" the Ranch Rifle, I'm wondering if I actually need another Thumper!
What does "need" have to do with it ?
ReplyDeleteI do understand about the nonstandard calibers though.

Need? What's this "need" thing?
ReplyDeleteIn my best Inego Montoya voice: "You keep using this word 'need'. I do not think it means what you think it means."
ReplyDelete.450 Bushmaster ammo' doesn't seem to be very plentiful yet. Gun sales WILL go up if it becomes readily available. There's still a risk that it won't catch-on and those that "pop" for the guns will be stuck with "empties". Even though this combo' was born just up the road from me here in Michigan, I need to wait myself. I'm still lookin' for .348 Winchesters to materialize. Winchester "promised", when they brought back the Miroku "Model 71"-reduxs, that they'd keep makin ammo'. So far, nyet to that.

Life,
ReplyDeleteI have to admit being a child of the 50s and 60s. I still remember O'Connor calling the 348 the Hammer of Thor for Moose in thick brush. That although he hadn't used the 358 yet he suspected it would be just as good !
I also have to admit being bit by rounds I can't source any more. My 30-40 Krag and 350 Rem Mag have to live on overly expensive gunshow fodder. Lucky that 20 minutes from me there is a regular show run by an "antique" guns group. Just a couple of months ago there was a beautiful Model 71 in 348 there and the seller had a half dozen boxes of ammo. I started to salivate, lol. Just was too expensive for this pensioner (2500).
I picked up an 1895 Winchester in 405 Winchester recently. Luckily Hornady has pushed a good supply of ammo and brass out to the website guys. I am working on hoarding approx 200 rounds of ammo and brass. Should I ever run across large bruins or lions at the nearby mall I will be prepared !
Two of the most dangerous books I own are:
Cartridges of the World.
The Handloaders Manual of Cartridge Conversions.
They have too often provided the rationale for gun purchases I didnt need. BTW did you know you can build 348 brass from 470 NE !
Woops...my earlier mistake... 348 brass can be made from 450 NE brass.
ReplyDeleteThe Thumper concept is a semi-auto firing a .44 Magnum like cartridge, not, as way too many people have gotten in their heads, a .45-70 like one, let alone in a bolt action. Vastly different characteristics in terms of intended uses like urban combat, where low felt recoil in a carbine sized weapon allows fast followup shots.
ReplyDeletenj,
ReplyDeleteI have sad memories of .348 cases being re-formed into I think .445 Auto-Mags way back in the 70s. That was to fuel that other "Dirty Harry" gun. I know that a lot of those prized cases became scrap brass as far as I am concerned.
My "71" is an original "Standard Grade". I've had it for about a half-century. I came into it because of another sad story, best told another day.
The trajectory and ballistics for the original .348 was nearly identical to the .30-06 except for that near-.35 caliber 200 grain "soft-point" or "Silver-Tip" bullet. With my then young eyes, groups at 100 yards were "cigarette-pack" sized, shot with the iron sights. There are a lot of these guns out there. I thought that I heard that Turnbull was re-chambering some into .45-70. I have enough .348 ammo' to fuel a "last hunt". I'll get the rifle out for that, God Willing.
