Saturday

Dinner came out well. I did a chili rub on the salmon — 2 tablespoons ancho chili powder, 1 tablespoon New Mexico red, 1 tablespoon cumin and cooked it on a hot grill for right about 4 minutes. Served it with Cuban black beans with kale…kinda a weird mix, but it worked…the garlic, ginger, onions and spices definitely helped!

I think I'm going to keep the Remington Tac-14 not-a-shotgun. I've patterned it with the buckshot I've got here, but there;s still some I'd like to try. I think I have a good sense of how to integrate it into my self-defense plans here at the Secret Hidden Bunker, thanks to Gabe Suarez. I also really like it as a bedside companion for when things go pump in the night. I'm planning on outfitting it like Gabe's Stakeout 870, eventually with a red dot.

  1. While I would never argue the effectiveness of such a thing - because they can be made to play, I would worry what a jury would see when that is held up to them by the prosecution. You could be defending a bus load of nuns, and they are going to see "sawed-off shotgun" and mess their uninformed pants.

As part of a collection/accumulation, have fun at the range. As part of something to actually point at someone and use with intent to harm and the result not being a complete legal cluster f*ck, good luck with that.

Does it really fit a niche that nothing else does? Is your life really in danger if you don't use THAT tool? I think you will make it though the night employing better, more effective, and less jury-sensitive options. Remember the Fish 10mm case in AZ.

But, you have to do what you have to do.

  5. I put a surefire forearm light on mine. Since the most likely use will be at night, I would rather have the light source than a small laser dot. Oh, and within 20 yards or so, if something is IN the circle of light, they are in the strike zone.

MB wondering if you have seen this little device which is being sold as achieving seamless feeding of Aquila mini shells? For 15 bucks it couldn't hurt to give it a try. The benefit being a nice increase of capacity. Capacity being a major drawback of a itty bitty shotty's.

I didn't think that it would take Remington long to come up with this version of the 870 after Mossberg came out with their rendition. I was looking forward to the Remington since I already have a couple of regular 870s and adding this one to my "stable" would seem like the natural thing to do. I think that the safety mounted on the trigger guard of the Remington is superior to the top mounted one on the Mossberg. The top mounted one may be susceptible to inadvertently being swiped to "off", or "on" during handling, causing a "surprise". Just my take on "top", or tang-mounted safeties.

Anyhow, My Remingtons have been very reliable over the 49 years since I bought my first one.

    P. S.: The "10mm Arizona" conviction wasn't because of the caliber of the gun. It seemed more to be due to the caliber of the shooter's defense. The prosecution only used the caliber for dramatic affect. The real drama was that the shooter couldn't convince the court that the use of deadly force was justified.

    Gerry,

The MagPul forend on this Remington has M-Lok slots on each side that allow mounting a light using commonly available hardware. That's the 3 slots on the sides of the forend that you see in the pic' of the gun at the end of the link included in Michael's article.

    Check it out:

    https://www.magpul.com/products/firearms-accessories/hand-guards

MagPul also has one available for the Mossberg, even though Mossberg chose not to outfit their gun with it. Check out how Mossberg's gun behaved in this test:

I always wondered why they never make these short shotties in 20 gauge? I think it would be so much easier to handle. Anyone ever see one in 20?
    Cookie

    ReplyDelete
  13. Anonymous9:33 PM

    Cookie,

"20's" don't always kick less than a "12". Even though 20's usually shoot a 5/8 oz. load vs. the 12's 7/8 oz., because the 20-guage guns are usually lighter, they can actually shoot harder. It's not always the case, but it happens often. It' just good ol' physics.

I'm guessing that there'll be some 20 and .410-guage guns to follow in these "shorties" since there already are in the full-length versions. If they come out with a .410, they'll benefit from all of the loads that are already available for the "Judge" handgun.

  15. Michael, totally unrelated, but had to ask. Why do you think that the music scene today elevates the kind of canned country music that is prevalent with the pretty boys and the hot little girls, or God forbid, the no talent hacks like the Taylor Swifts, when there are literally thousands of these types out there? https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FhgZ4hBGJkY
This is just a random homeless guy I saw, but I use to play music and there are so many talented musicians who are not only better but don't have any baggage, like the drug abuse, or the booze. Who are down to earth, family people. I see them often on Austin City Limits or similar shows, but they simply don't get the national exposure and touring dates that some of the big names do, that I can't justify spending a hundred bucks a ticket to go see, when I can't stand their canned auto tuned junk.
Do you think that it will come back to those who can actually sing and play and write, or will it always be like this?

Whatever happened to the "Second Amendment Council" that was supposed to be formed to protect our rights and get rid of useless gun laws and regulations? Is that a broken promise?

    ReplyDelete
  22. Anonymous6:00 PM

    NJ,

I read the article you linked. As I live in Michigan (where this story seems to have originated), we have to register our handguns after either getting a purchase permit, or possess a "CPL" as license to buy a handgun. Once purchased, you have to submit the registration to the Michigan State Police for archiving. Whenever more than one gun is registered in what appears to be the same transaction, another Federal/ATF form must also be filled out by both the buyer and seller. The seller submits that one. That form then gets scrutinized and it is treated as if the transaction is a "straw purchase". I bought 2 collectables that I didn't want to miss out on and had to do this once.
It will be interesting to see where this goes.

    Thanks Anon' @ 1:21,

I know that this new format ("www-dot-myoutdoortv-dot-com") is the future, but for now, I'm paying $4/month for The Outdoor Channel on DirecTV already. This new format is $9.99/month. I've also LOST another outdoor/hunting/shooting channel as they went all-HD and I neither have an HD TV, nor want to pay another $7/month for that upgraded tuner and antenna. But the deal-breaker for me is that my internet service is DSL and not broadband and it really doesn't support uninterrupted video viewing, no matter what AT&T says. So, for now, I'm on the sidelines waiting for the next break-through that benefits me.

    Thanks again,

@LIFE....I second your emotion. Here with Verizon I have lost for the last couple of years all access to current shooting and hunting shows. Only in the last months has the Pursuit channel been offered on the platinum package. I am unwilling to spend even more on stuff I wont watch. Unfortunately these corporations fail to understand that the internet was intended to be essentially free. Jim Scoutten has come around and put his shows on Youtube. At this point I use Youtube to watch Shooting USA, thunder ranch videos with Clint Smith, James Yeager ranting and raving, and half dozen other channels. My take is that the demo these shows are aiming at is the 14 to 30 crowd. Same as the Carls Jr crowd. I'll pass on the T&A and the killing people 24/7 focus. So rather than the push/paywall model I will go with a more relaxed model where I get to chose the show I watch and keep it free. Combined with the 4 or 5 podcasts, including MB, where I can FF over content I am not interested in, it occupies my retired arse for the week. Heck I get a lot more enjoyment from actually reading BOOKS.....sorry if this sounded like a rant.

No Outdoor Channel offerings on cable or satellite in Canada,
so the Internet-based Outdoor Channel offering is a blessing for me.
Unlike some other services, it isn't region restricted for Canadian subscribers.

I'm in an urban location, so I have gigabit fibre Internet service for my residence.
My Internet download is specifically 300 Mbits/sec for the overall service,
    so streaming isn't an issue.

By the way, MOTV has an Android "save for later" feature that permits download
for later playback. That can be a workaround for stuttering Internet service.

And how his daughter, though having baby at 18 with gang banger Blood, is really a marine biologist doing important work with Jacques Cousteau. I am not even going to mention the the guy who rents his garage to a drug dealer. Then likes to mow the lawn at night in his pajamas. Which can be a little annoying. Especially in January.

    NJ,

We've got all of that here not only in the "Murder City" (Yeah, yeah, I know they want you to believe "Motor City"), but it's spreading like invasive tendrils outside of it too.

I think what is even more insidious is the neo-Marxist/real fascist-leftism that supports all of that. Here in Michigan, we have all of the fake disability claims and welfare that the leftists turn a blind-eye to. But more insidious is the thievery being done by our public sector employees, government officials, politicians and the teachers union members and retirees. In the latter, they retire "at-salary" and enjoy regular cost-of-living raises. They also have more retirees on-roll than active teachers. We have "friends" that have both been retired longer than they have worked as public school teachers and their ever inflating retirements (waaaaay more $ than when working) are enough to justify getting a huge mortgage on a new custom home and they're both in their late 70's! And they didn't have to sell their other prime real estate to afford the new place! They're keeping there heads down too. But as the teachers union tells us, "it's for the children" and anybody who doesn't support that "isn't". Oh yeah, and they sent their one-and-only daughter to PRIVATE SCHOOL!

    Sheesh..... :(
