Nice post over at Say Uncle (clink the post's title to get to the link) on the flurry of posts about the disappearance of "real men." His take — it's all B-S. My take? He's right. Out here in the rural west, we never much bought into the post-macho metrosexual sensitive to the point of tears paradigm for men. We work for a living. Times are too darn scary to be overcome with nonsense angst.
Male or female, I really like the abbreviated version of The Cowboy Way as a handy way to orient one's life — "If it ain't yours, don't take it; if it ain't true, don't say it; if it ain't right, don't do it." Covers most of the things that happen in life, doesn't it?

I won't be wronged. I won't be insulted. I won't be laid a-hand on. I don't do these things to other people, and I require the same from them.

We in the South (at least the rural South) never bought into that crap either.
Wish I could say the same back east (southern Maine)... too many metrosexuals.. most drive metrosexual cars (you know the ones i mean) with bumber stickers with slashed w's (cant believe they still can not get over it!), and others with obama stickers proudly displayed.. many with both! At least they dont seem to be at the range! Sorry to get political, but there does seem to be a connection!
South Dakota has about 7 of those "guys".....and we're watching them.
The heart of it is that "real men" (for lack of a better shorthand) didn't change with the times; simply held to what is right and ignored the rest.
Reading the original article, the author postulated that women could get "real men" back, if they just started valuing "manly" (again, no better shorthand) attributes again. Seems sad-she can't even see that part of what defines manliness is rejecting that very malleability.
Perhaps it would be more accurate to say that there exists today the same percentage of "real men" that there always has, modern life has simply redirected all the males who were faking it when it was popular. Perhaps.
Then again, I could be completely wrong. That's happened before.
Speaking of metrosexuals, Michael, I believe you drive a Honda Element, right?
Would a cowboy saddle up on a horse like that? Perish the thought!
;-)
But it's a really manly Honda Element! I may paint teeth on the front grill...

There were a couple of articles that are relevant to the issue:
Women prefer less manly men because they are on the pill:

Men are less manly because of all the extra estrogen in the environment because of the hormones in the urine of Women on the pill. It is reducing testicle size across all vertebrate species.

Wish I could figure out how to say something about cowboys that was relevant.
