It was quickly apparent that you might forget how to unload the tube-fed guns, or that you might forget to rack the pump after each shot - but there was no messing about with the HS12. Load, mount as the safety slides forward, and PRESS. No problems.I bring this up because Marshal Halloway and I have been mulling over created a 1/2-day class on self-defense with a double barrel shotgun, then film that class for DRTV. We had such great response with the "tactical" lever action rifle and the single-action revolver self-defense class as SHOOTING GALLERY episodes, and I get a surprising number of queries about using the double for self-defense.
Of course, we've featured Stoeger's 2 DB tactical offerings, the SxS and the O/U:
They did the SxS last year:
As I've said for years and years that the double barrel is a fiercely efficient self-defense tool...like everything else, you've got to know how to operate the things. Since I'm a cowboy shooter who shoots a double-barrel in competition, it's pretty much second nature to me now...like breathing out and breathing in...I'm very grateful she's a woman, and so easy to forget...whoops! Defaulted to show tunes...LOL!
I've seen uglier guns but I can't remember where...
ReplyDeleteI would think an optic on a short shotty would actually be slower than shooting it like normal.
Butt hits shoulder same time as the comb hits cheek, gun fires a couple of miliseconds after that.
Why bother with eyeballing a sight? You don't do it when blasting a flushing quail, unless you want to miss the bird.
Agree with you, Kmitch...bead every bit as functional as red dot, and probably much faster...my ancient Stevens 311, which stays within arms reach, has a plain old boring large brass bead...

I once "contacted the CEO" of Ruger about offering an 20" cyl/cyl Red Label. I missed out on such a Beretta O/U last year as when I saw it on the rack @ the LGS I thought it was a POS Stoeger at a glance. A good friend walked in and bought it later that afternoon.
ReplyDeleteA two-barrel for serious defense? Um, no. Even though it may look intimidating looking at it from the viewpoint of a "perp'" caught-in-the-act, any necessary re-load may be beyond the average Joe, in the heat of battle. I might consider a "four-barrel" with 16" tubes though. The intimidation-factor would only be exceeded by the coolness-factor.

@anonymous; if you need more then 2 shots of 00 buck shot for a perp in your home then you're not dealing with a perp or 2, it's a gang of looters. In that case grab one of the hand guns you should have close to hand.
