So Governor Hickenlooper signed all the gun laws on his desk, citing "widespread support." Right. This whole process has been a quilt of lies. Obviously, we look toward both the legal challenges in the courts and the elections in 2014.
The biggest question — or rather, statements that hide a question — I've received to day is, "Well, nobody's going to enforce these ridiculous laws!" With the unstated..."are they?" There is a great saying...things go on until they don't. Here's what I think...these laws won't be enforced until they are. Consider this letter that went out to New York law enforcement in the last couple of days from the New York Department of Criminal Justice Services (courtesy SHALL NOT BE QUESTIONED):
At a time when all of us are finding ourselves doing more with less, a reminder about a resource available from New York State that can assist you in your efforts to solve cases, prevent crime and better serve and protect your communities.
The state has established a toll-free tip line – 1-855-GUNSNYS (1-855- 486-7697) to encourage residents to report illegal firearm possession. The tip line also allows for information to be submitted via text – individuals can text GUNTIP and their message to CRIMES (274637). While the state will provide the administrative support and fund the rewards, the investigation and validity of the tip will be up to each local department.
To spread the word about this free resource, New York State is planning a comprehensive campaign, including public service announcements that will air on television and radio stations across Upstate.
The tip line can provide your agencies with another avenue for receiving intelligence about crimes being committed in your jurisdictions. This initiative is designed for communities where no tip lines are in place and is not meant to replace existing gun tip lines.
Here’s how the tip line operates:
The New York State Police staff the tip line 24 hours a day. Upon receiving a call, troopers will solicit as much information as possible regarding a firearm tip, while allowing the individual to remain anonymous. The caller will be informed that this program is not the traditional gun buyback program but rather is focused on identifying individuals who are carrying an illegal firearm.
The State Police will in turn contact the appropriate police agency with the lead to initiate an investigation. Staff from the Division of Criminal Justice Services (DCJS) will follow up with that agency to determine the validity of the lead. Once the investigation is completed, the police agency would convey to DCJS the outcome of the investigation.
If the information leads to an arrest for the illegal possession of a firearm, the “tipster” will be awarded $500. DCJS staff will handle all of the financial transactions.
State Police staff will explain the program in its entirety upon notifying an agency that a lead has been generated for their jurisdiction. If you have any questions in the interim, please contact DCJS Deputy Commissioner Tony Perez in the Office of Public Safety at 518-485-7610.
Janine KavaSounds so happy and upbeat, doesn't it? We all have to do more with less, so let's pay citizens to inform on other citizens! And make sure it can all be done anonymously...hey, what could possibly go wrong with that plan? After all, it has worked so well before...this from The History Place:
Director of Public Information
New York State Division of Criminal Justice Services
...each Gestapo agent operated at the center of a large web of spies and informants. The problem for the average citizen was that no one ever knew for sure just who those informants were. It could be anyone, your milkman, the old lady across the street, a quiet co-worker, even a schoolboy. As a result, fear ruled the day. Most people realized the necessity of self-censorship and generally kept their mouths shut politically, unless they had something positive to say.If you haven't read Matthew Bracken's novel ENEMIES FOREIGN AND DOMESTIC, now might be a good time.
To be fair, New York and California are pretty far apart, and so his "widespread" statement could be considered true...
ReplyDeleteSounds like a great opportunity for "monkeywrenching"... if we all call/text this "tipline" with bogus info it'll overwhelm it and put it out of business quite quickly.
ReplyDeletewhy make it bogus? call in your local LEO- why should they be exempt and the citizens (who they are-civilians just like us) be exempt from this law.
ReplyDeletefyi- 16 yrs a LEO
who needs more coffiee
ReplyDeleteMonkeywrenching is incredibly effective against stuff like this. Remember the White House's "flag@whitehouse.gov fiasco? I just texted a tip to their CRIMES number to inform them that hundreds of US firearms were illegally shipped to Mexico and are now used in murders and other crimes down there. I also tipped the perpetrator's address... 950 Pennsylvania Ave, Washington, DC. Do I care if they trace it back to me? Nope.
ReplyDeleteNow you have to be up on NY news, but the media in NY was pushing hard to get all the pistol permit info and publish it. This is like a perfect storm for 15 year old kids SWATTING folks. Neighbors with grudges. Family members who hate.
ReplyDeleteYou'll have a hard time convincing me that the powers that be in NYS don't want some horrible conflagration to happen as a result of their moronic actions.
Just to be SAFE, it might be a good idea to call in the addresses of those crazy 1 amendment users in the print media. They must have something of interest to the NYSP.
ReplyDeleteWe can take this to the courts, and I think that we should attack on every front available to us but the only way to make the democrats fear us again is with a display of political power in 2014. They will stop messing with us when the re-learn the lesson that we can take their jobs and political power away from them.
ReplyDeleteOK, New York says "we don't have the money to do a lot of things, soooo, we'll just spend a lot more and, in the process, incite people to rat on their neighbor or, more likely, make up stuff about him. Just glad that I am long gone from there.
ReplyDeleteTo badly Paraphrase Winston Churchill:
ReplyDelete"From Lake Erie in the north to Chesapeake Bay in the south a Blue Curtain has descended across the Northeast United States."
The curtain extends from near Erie PA along the NY/PA border to the NJ/PA border to the Delaware and Maryland PA border to the Maryland W Va and VA border to the DC/Va border to Chesapeake Bay.
North/ NE of the Curtain lies Leftist tyranny, South /SE Lies Freedom. PA, W Va and VA are the frontier of freedom in the NE US.
(Did I miss any states?)
Geoff Ross (in PA thank God)
As for Colorado...
ReplyDeleteMolon Labe.
There are a LOT of VERY pissed off people in this state. Tar, feathers, pitchforks... rope, tree?
Don't forget the East German Stasi. AT LEAST 1 in 7 citizens were informants - internal spies - for the state.
ReplyDeleteOur own progressives are trying to require that parents inform schools in some districts that they have guns. New York has had an ilstatute-gun incentive for years. Our internal citizen-spy apparatus is just more incremental.
Colorado has a lot of good people, including some great sheriffs, but they are unfortunately taxed with an idiotic legislature. That is essentially true for the rest of us.
Thanks MB for posting about New York. Listening to the podcast and sent you a voicemail. I think that no Larry is right the limbs want to push so hard someone fights then they can say " SEE. We told you we need to take these ar's and all guns away".
ReplyDeleteI gave Roy H the editor of American Handgunner an idea perhaps shooting gallery or the outdoor channel could try this: have a contest for the residence of New York and Colorado , winner gets a free move to Texas or Florida.
Just an idea.
Sorry I hate apple it changes words
ReplyDeleteThis tactic was also widely used by the Soviets. It was "turn-in your neighbor". There, everybody was just prosecuted. To Hell with the facts.
ReplyDeleteThese lib's will be in for a surprise when they get everything that the want and what they get is USSR-West.

@ anon 7:11; Actually, no. USSR-WEST would be just their cup of tea. As long as they see THEIR hands on the controls.....Micheal, I know you're trying to recover from this treachery, but watch your back - a high visability opponent like yourself is a tempting target for these bums to attack, and we know the enemy has NO ethics.
ReplyDeleteI am stuck in the People's Democratic Republic of Maryland - we are still waiting for the axe to fall... can you give us any intel on Baretta's intensions if O'Malley's crap passes? All I've heard is rumors; is Remington serious about leaving Illion, NY?
Curious minds wanna know if the Industry is with us....
i hear remington sold outand caved in to new york to the tune of $20mil.in tax breaks etc.

Colorado Gov. John Hickenlooper signed into law "three sweeping gun-control measures" yesterday.
The bills become law July 1, mandating background checks for all private sales and transfers, make gun buyers pay for those checks, and bans magazines with a capacity of 15 rounds. According to a letter from Magpul, the bill also bans any magazine that can be "readily converted" to a banned capacity.
Does this now mean that all magazine are banned? One would think so! Thus all firearms; except for single or double shot are now illegal??

HANOVER, N.Y. (WIVB) - The first suspect charged under New York State’s new gun law faced a judge Wednesday morning. Thirty-two-year-old Benjamin Wassell, of Silver Creek, allegedly sold illegal assault and semi-automatic assault weapons to an undercover state police investigator.

Hanover Town Court was filled with supporters of Wassell. Supporters tell News 4 they want all the charges against Wassell dropped, including the charge that violates the New York SAFE Act. Supporters say the new gun law takes away their second amendment rights, and Wassell’s rights.
"He did a tour in Iraq and stuff and he took a bomb hit for his country and this is how we pay him back? I don't think so," said Dewayne Farley, a friend of Wassell's.
Wassell charges a misdemeanor charge and three felonies, after allegedly selling the weapons to undercover investigators in January and then in February.
One supporter says Wassell was a Marine, “he was blown up for his country and here he is being persecuted.”
Protester from Alden Leonard Roberto said, “What’s happening to him is a travesty. They are violating not only his second amendment rights, but my second amendment rights by this unjust prosecution. This law should have never gone into effect, the court should have ruled it unconstitutional.”
After Wassell was arrested, Attorney General Eric Schneiderman saying any sale of any semi automatic weapon will not go unpunished.
