Back in the 1960s and '70s, a formidable gun control movement formed out of concern about urban crime. Widespread riots and the assassinations of Martin Luther King Jr. and Robert Kennedy and, later, the wounding of President Reagan added to concerns about the prevalence of guns. Other high-profile shootings, including the killing of five children in Stockton, Calif., in 1989 and the slaying of four federal agents during a siege at the Branch Davidian compound in Waco, Texas, in 1993, focused attention on assault weapons in particular.
A bevy of national laws followed – restrictions on mail-order rifle sales in 1968, the outlawing of "cop killer" bullets in 1984, the establishment of "drug-free school zones" in 1990 that included stiff penalties for anyone carrying guns in those areas, an assault weapons ban in 1994. By most accounts, the assault weapons ban, which tellingly expired in 2004, marked the end of the gun control arc.

CSM's been pretty good when it comes to guns. They did a great write-up on gunbloggers at the 2009 NRA Convention and how we trounce the anti-gunners online. http://www.csmonitor.com/USA/Politics/2009/0516/a-rifle-in-one-hand-a-laptop-in-the-other-behind-the-scene-with-pro-gun-bloggers
Fordham Law School held a conference on "Gun Control and The Second Amendment" this past Friday. All the top notch academic types. I attended the all day event. Since I haven't been able to go the seminars that Alan Gottleib holds, this free event was perfect for me and right in my back yard. MB if your interested I wrote up a pretty long summary that I posted on a local blog. I could post it here or send it to you or Marshal separately, but won't do so unless you say so. Just thought it might be of interest to your readers.
Sorry to disagree, but while the author did present information from both sides... references by the author to those of us exercising our 2nd amendment rights as "heat-packers"...
"While 20 years ago many people were arming themselves as part of a nostalgic identification with citizen armies"... I'm sorry, but I've never armed myself as some identification with citizen armies or militias...
"Even President Obama... has acquiesced on the issue. He signed legislation... allowed people to carry concealed guns in national parks."... Yet no mention of all the additional items his administration has done through rules and executive orders to keep certain sporting shotguns and M1 Garands from coming into the country...
While I'm happy the author presented information from both sides... this "heat-packer" isn't quite ready to say balanced and definitely not ready to say "un-biased"...

We can't be lulled into complacency though. We need to continue to set a positive example for all things guns and hunting and we need to continue to present a well thought out argument, supported by facts and data, that in-turn supports the Second Amendment. Remember, it isn't just about hunting. Educating the uninformed public is key. We have all had many successes I'm sure, when we've done that. I personally have added many "converts" to my field of friends who also own and use guns now, including a Massachusetts liberal!
By the way, one of the most popular merit badges in scouting contiues to be for rifle shooting, followed by shotgun and then archery. Most Mom's find that they can support that too!

Always loved the term cop killer bullets...Phew what a relief, I am just glad my ordinary civilian killer bullets will not harm a LEO(S). and those gun free school zones....WOW, I mean how effective they are...the teachers and parents visiting schools etc can no longer protect the kids from a psycho who forgot to obey the rules...shocking!beyond belief!
WHAT?! They said Florida enacted the first shall issue CCW law in 1987. Well let me tell you what, it was us in the Evergreen State (Washington) who had the first shall-issue system. We passed ours in 1961. that's right. this article is inaccurate
