Memorial Day 2012

"It is foolish and wrong to mourn the men who died. Rather, we should thank God that such men lived."
---  George S. Patton

What we need to remember most of all is that every day is Memorial Day. All that we enjoy on this day, the opening hours of summer, we owe to those who serve, who have served and those who have fallen. The dream that is America exists only as long -- and not one second longer -- as the greatest among us are willing to make that sacrifice.

As always, my thoughts are with my friends on lonely, dangerous duty in a country of no consequence and with all who walk that duty with them.

Watched Tom Selleck host the 50th anniversary of the Viet Nam War at the VN Memorial just a few hours ago in DC. Very moving tribute to those who saw no parades nor warm welcome home in their time.

Then it's already gone. How many sons or daughters of national politicians are serving members of our military? How many of them have been serving members? Getting to be a very few.

I know I don't want either of my kids in the military these days. I don't trust our political leadership--of either party--to be wise about the employment of military force. Good Lord, they're already trying to gin up support for an "intervention" in Syria.

And if one of my kids had to make the sacrifice, I want to know that it was damn well worth it. These days, I don't trust our political leadership with that call. Maybe in a few years things will improve and I would again approve of one of my kids serving, but not now--not with this crowd or the potential crowd.
