Return of the Taurus .44 Special 5-shot!

This from Taurus this AM...I'm excited because one of my old Taurus 5-shot .44 Specials is one of the most accurate .44 Specials I own (and, yes, I own a bunch!). I still don't like .40s, but I will be buying the .,44 Special!

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

Taurus Introduces New Large Caliber, Lightweight Revolvers

MIAMI – The new Taurus® 405 and 445 revolvers are aggressive wheel-guns that deliver superior accuracy and stopping power without the heft or bulk of most large caliber revolvers. These 5-shot revolvers are available in blue or matte stainless finish with the Taurus Ribber Grip® that reduces felt recoil.

The 445 is chambered in .44 Special and features an Ultra-Lite® frame that weighs only 22 ounces. The revolver’s barrel measures 2 inches, with an overall length of 7 inches. The 405, Taurus’ first .40 S&W revolver, features a lightweight frame that weighs just 29 ounces and includes stellar clips. The revolver’s barrel measures 2 inches, with an overall length of 7 inches. Like all Taurus firearms the 405 and 445 come standard with the unique onboard Taurus Security System® that allows users to securely lock the gun using an inconspicuous key-lock. MSRP $452 - $514.

Oh...do I dare hope that a 455 (.45LC) is not far away?.....

Folks, a 20-22 oz. .44 Special isn't a wrist breaker by any means. I used to shoot 100 rounds at a time from the similar Charter Arms Bulldog. For a while with wood grips. 200's @ 900 fps, 240's @ 800 fps are no big deal.

Bill - I have little girly wrists. It would hurt me. ;)

I own a Taurus 445Ti (a titanium 5-shot .44 Special w/ported barrel) that would seem to be a likely candidate for the "best pocket revolver" award.

The reality is somewhat different.

The factory stocks make it difficult to conceal well. Ammo is expensive, hard to find and the porting precludes use of less costly 246 gr LRN "cowboy" loads.

Quality control was an issue, as well.

The piece would bind up during even brief range sessions because of a too-tight cylinder gap. The cylinder bolt stop spring had insufficient tension, which caused the cylinder to skip past an indexed chamber when reloading.

All this can be remedied with enough time and effort (except for the lack of good aftermarket concealment stocks) but the Ruger LCR would be my preference in a pocket revolver if I had to do it over.

MALTHUS

BTW: The porting feature reduces recoil quite effectively. If you can control a 1911 using only your weak hand, you can just as readily fire a lightweight, ported .44 Special one-handed with your dominant hand.

I still miss that 3 inch barreled Taurus (I think it was the model 441) that I sold to a friend of mine a few years back. Heavy blue steel with wood grips. I'm still trying to buy it back, but he won't sell.

Titanium will heat up and expand which effectively locks up the cylinder until it cools down. My Taurus Titanium Tracker in .41 magnum does that on about the fourth cylinder of heavy loads if shot rapid fire. After 10 minutes of cooling the cylinder revolves freely.
