Impending Independence Day!

Asta and Newt duking it out...it appears Asta is winning...cats is mean...

Hope that you have great plans for Independence Day! I'm going for low key here. I've been at a dead run since I got back from Italy...there have been some hard production decisions to be made, and that is never easy...we will have some  pretty exciting announcements to make in the upcoming weeks. Hopefully, I'll do a little shooting over the weekend, which seems appropriate for this particular holiday.

I'll be at Burris next week filming for both their website and DRTV.  BTW, we're going to be running my concealed carry tips from the last few seasons of THE BEST DEFENSE on DRTV. I'm also thinking that I'm going to move the new season's concealed carry tips to DRTV and promo them on the broadcast TBD. We'll start running the cameras on TBD end of this month...we're going to model the Las Vegas "Bonnie & Clyde" police shooting this season.

This is interesting...from Fox News:
The U.S. Army is moving forward to replace the Cold War-era M9 9mm pistol with a more powerful handgun that also meets the needs of the other services.
As the lead agent for small arms, the Army will hold an industry day July 29 to talk to gun makers about the joint, Modular Handgun System or MHS.
The MHS would replace the Army's inventory of more than 200,000 outdated M9 pistols and several thousand M11 9mm pistols with one that has greater accuracy, lethality, reliability and durability, according to Daryl Easlick, a project officer with the Army's Maneuver Center of Excellence at Fort Benning, Georgia.
"It's a total system replacement -- new gun, new ammo, new holster, everything," Easlick said.
In other words, here we go again. I would say that the deciding factor will be whether the White House turns over from Dem/Socialist to Republican in 2016. For all their whining about how they support the troops, the Dems are violently anti-military and at their core despise soldiers. The likelihood of a Democratic administration shelling out for 200,000 new pistols is, in effect, plus-or-minus zero.

If they go to trials, it will have a net positive effect on the civilian market. The previous long-anticipated never culminated SOCOM trials lead to a spurt of development on .45 ACP pistols (as did the military selection of the Beretta M9, which validated the larger-capacity 9mm concept). Consider that this time around a slew of companies, including Beretta, Glock, FNH, Sig Sauer, S&W, Ruger, Springfield and, heck, even Colt have viable platforms in place rather than designing from scratch.

Will be interesting...

Tim Dillon, late of a brief stint at STI after serving at Brownell's has surfaced as new president and CEO of Noveske Rifleworks:
Dillon brings to the company over 25 years of experience, dedication and support of the American firearms industry. Noveske Rifleworks LLC proudly announces the hiring of Tim Dillon as the new President and Chief Executive Officer of their Oregon based company. Tim will be responsible for the daily operations and continuing the legacy of late Johnny Noveske's vision of producing the finest AR based rifles, parts and accessories to a demanding customer base.
Dillon is a master in manufacturing and process, and he'll be a good match for Noveske.

Last Wednesday went to the outdoor channel to record my three favorite shows the best, shooting and gun stories. ONLY gun stories was on the program. Looked the entire day and no best defence or shooting gallery .

What gives?

Does this reignite the caliber wars? Hard to imagine they'd select anything not in a NATO standard cartridge. Is .45 ACP NATO? 9mm ball is one of the worst possible choices for stopping power (well, except for little guys like 22lr or .25acp). Due to some ridiculous ancient treaty we can't use modern hollow points. After all, shooting someone with solid bullets is much kinder and gentler.

PhilaBOR's headed in the right direction: As long as the military is stuck with ball ammo they're going to have a sub-optimal handgun solution regardless of caliber. IMHO, they'd be much better off spending that program money on lawyers and diplomats to facilitate the legal adoption of modern bullet designs, namely bonded JHPs.

Happy Independence Day everyone!

9mm is not effective? I think those dead American and British soldiers over in Germany and France who were killed with a MP40 submachine gun might strongly disagree.

I heard a rumor the Obama administration was pushing to replace the standard issue gun with biochip guns, so the white house could shut down any gun use not approved by Valeri Jarrett remotely.. also to make it fair by allowing the enemy to hack the new guns. And at the same time, flood the market with the new model so that states would start requiring all guns to have this biochip feature.. I wouldn't put anything by these clowns who invented fast and furious.. You heard it here first..

Hopefully, they will consider calibers other than 9mm and .45. .40 S&W or 10mm should be considered.

Vince:

The problem with .40SW is it is already a high pressure round. Doesn't take much bullet setback to turn it into a grenade. This caliber seems to have the highest failure history due to this problem. None of the current pistol barrels have sufficient materiel to handle the pressure spike that occurs. The .357Sig would be a better choice, since the smaller bullet would compress the powder to a lessor degree with an equal amount of setback.

However, the real changes need to be:

1) smaller grip/shorter trigger reach

2) closed slide, to keep dust/sand out

3) move away from ball to JHP. Anything but ball should be an improvement. It's been shown that ball is not a humanitarian choice. You tend to have to shoot someone more times to stop them, which leads to increasing the permanent damage if they live.
