.30 Remington AR

Here's the specs on the new Remington .30 for their R-15 line of AR rifles from over at Gun Shots:
The idea behind the product is to give .308 Win. type performance in an AR-15 sized upper. The ballistics charts for the new round show give figures for a 125-gr. round in the 30 Rem. AR—or .30 RAR as I’ll call it here for short—versus a 165-grain bullet in .308 Win. Velocities are about the same for both rounds. The .30 RAR exits at 2,800 fps vs. 2,700 fps for the .308 Win. At 400 yards, the .30 RAR is going 1,816 fps to the .308’s 1,966.
I'm not a huge fan of new cartridges, but one never knows, does one? There's a lot of competition in the arena, if you count the 6.8 Remington and the 6.5 Grendel. I'd still rather have an FAL in plain old boring 7.62/.308.

Have you looked at the FNH/USA AR
.308? And have you seen Otis's new product, Life Liner?

Another new cartridge? The world needs another new cartridge just like we needed the 30 TC and 300 RCM. NOT!

For those that can't seem spending 1,900 on a battle rifle (never mind that I spent 1,600 on a M1A), is there anything wrong with a Century rebuild or a regular one from any of the auctions sites?

Not to be confused with the old 30 Remington my father in law uses for a deer rifle?

If you make it, some gun writer will praise it, some yokel will buy it and some gun nut will try and wildcat it.

I'm not clear on the need for all of these specialized AR calibers either. There is already a .308 version of the AR, what possible ballistics would be missing from using that platform, which could be barreled in 243, 260, 7mm, 338 as well as 308?. All commercially available ammo, components & tools.

This is goofy. If Remington wanted a new 308 caliber AR-15 round they should have just used the 30 WSSM round. The 30RAR looks more like a benchrest round then a hunting round. The 30RAR will be a lot better in the 40-X than in the R-15. The Cerebrus crowd would just be better off offering up an upper/ rifle chambered in 6.5 Grendel then trying to force an new cartridge into the market. It would be different if the 7.62x39 wasn't in existence and available with reasonably cheap close to 30 caliber ammo that will end up being 1/3 the price of Big Green's new round.

Interesting plan on Remington's part. Might be interesting if they get any interest from the Army. That would make the round immediately viable.

Hey Ratcatcher 55, you forgot the last two steps! Those are: "Some gun-writer will then decry it" and last, "They'll stop making it" and you'll be stuck with an empty gun! Those steps apply even if the cartridge is a good one. Look at the 10mm. Great cartridge, good guns to put it through and great balistics. A true all=purpose round. But nooooo, it became the poster child for weakling shooters that "can't handle the sharp recoil". All this came from the same people who first sold it to us and the FBI and big state police agencies. Yesterday, I found some premium 10mm stuff at a big outdoors store, for "only" $54 for a box of twenty (20)!!!! Gimme a break!

Any reason Remington couldn't just use the old .30 Rem as the new AR round? It would be great for those who have a few of the old rifles as well as introduce it to new shooters....think .30-30 in a semi-auto...w/o having to deal with commie ammo...

From what I've read, Remington's intent was to make a suitable deer cartridge that was usable in an ar-15 lower and not an ar-10 lower. If the ballistics look right I might try it out.

I see the allure - why have an ar10 lower and an ar15 lower, i also think they should have started with a 6.5mm (or even the 6mm) as the mighty .308 has pretty a bad BC. Think that introducing one of these intermediate cartridges would be a better way to gage interest. But would of been nice if they could had developed this new cartridge so they could fit/(be used) in standard double stack mags.

I,m leaning on getting a 30remington.ar where they gone worng! a heaiver barrel an slow bruning power to get the pressure to match closer to 308..62thou psi ..having a lower ar15 to match to 223.223/5.56..remington30ar not a bad deal.. one lower for up to three uppers..an at the same size an fitting magazine lower. being a 30cal size will not that be a ar10?
