Correcting what I've previously heard and reported...and I'm glad to be wrong! This just in from American Rifleman’s Mark Keefe:
With the vast array of new guns in the Taurus booth at the 2011 SHOT Show, it was easy to go into new-product overload. But the one gun that stood out most was the 28-gauge Raging Judge revolver. Whenever there is something truly new and different, there are bound to be juicy rumors, which included that the gun had been declared a National Firearms Act item by BATFE and “removed.”
This is simply not the case. Taurus President and CEO Bob Morrison invited officials from the ATF’s Technology Branch to discuss some of the firm’s new product introductions. “I asked them to come and give some advice,” Morrison said. By all accounts the meeting was cordial, professional, and not a “raid” or “gotcha” as erroneously reported elsewhere. No determination on the gun’s status was made at the show. Remember, to even be in the United States at all, the prototype had to be cleared by BATFE for importation. On the 28-gauge Raging Judge revolver, Taurus sought BATFE’s advice on some modifications to the gun and is the process of implementing the results of those suggestions. This is a very common practice; gun manufacturers and importers regularly work with BATFE as the firearm industry’s regulatory agency.
Also, despite rumors to the contrary, the .45 Colt/.410-bore lever-action Ranch Hand with the rifled barrel is good to go for importation, as is the 28-gauge Circuit Judge. You’ll see them later on this year, as well as the 28-gauge Raging Judge, with minor modifications.
Rumors also abound regarding an impending ATF ruling regarding shotguns and “sporting purposes,” but they have nothing to do with the 28-gauge Raging Judge.

Yippee!!! Now maybe we will see some new buck and ball ammo for the 28 ga. Way overdue IMNSHO (In my not so humble opinion)
28 GA has been overlooked when it comes to usable defense loads. The 28 is a great gun for small folks and kids to learn on, far superior to the idiot 410.
THe idea of a 28 ga revolver and some new loads gives me a wet spot!!!
Now somebody needs to develope a new handgun cartridge to fit the chamber and bore of the .28 ga :)
"Now somebody needs to develop a new handgun cartridge to fit the chamber and bore of the 28 ga"
I don't think so, Tim. A fixed metallic cartridge with a single projectile would have to receive a "sporting use" exemption otherwise it would make the Raging Judge a DD. "Sporting use" shotshells seem to be what make this "not illegal" sweet spot work.
Nobody jumps the gun, panics, and breathlessly spreads rumors like us. Every new firearm should come with smelling salts.
Dave, you 're right! Gonna star making some calls tomorrow to see where this one jumped the rails. Part of it was that the news came Friday, when everyone was sprinting away fro SHOT.
No excuse...mynapologies...

Hey, Mike, it's not just you. When I say "we", I mean me, too. I've done it. I've been really good the past few years, though.
The light-speed of the Internet is a blessing and a curse. What did Churchill say about a lie getting halfway around the world before the truth has got its pants on? I don't envy you Web media guys who have the pressure to get the story out NOW.
Michael, any chance you can help spread the word on this?

Well it looks like we made it thru the SOTU message without any direct hits.
No offense MB but you've been wrong a lot (THANKFULLY!!) with your Henny Penny "The Sky Is Falling" knee jerk reactionary.
Unfortunately we need this from you to keep us on our toes, like the boy who cried wolf while (ignored in the end) did get eaten by the wolf.
So we soldier on ducking for cover - buying what we can afford, biting our fingernails while we huddle around the radio listening to Michael "Orson Welles" Bane tell us that aliens have invaded earth and our hope for survival looks bleak.
Michael
Thanks for the appology. Now, go after your sources and see if they are as bold as you are and accept responsibility. Those sources in-turn need to go after theirs, etc.
In the end, I have found that it is better to be an alarmist than a Pollyanna. Heeding the alarm causes us to spring into action and get involved.

Sadly, I kinda agree with Gus...my function is to shout. I "reached my majority" in those years when we wore Tuesday, sat quietly, and stressed how moderate we were...I couldn't understand why we kept doing the same thing when it ws failing so profoudly.
Sometimes shouting pays off in odd ways...I think the Great AR Bubble of 2009, which yes, I helped fuel, redefined the Dems agenda on gun control. Many...no, I'd say most...of the hothouse academics and "activists" who swept in with BHO really believed that "America" was with them on gun control (since they never ever actually talked to any "Americans"). The Bubble frightened them down to their Karl Marx boxer shorts, because it showed in a visual, unequivocal way that mainstream America was really really not with them. So gun control disappeared from Barry's new house.
Besides, there's always Sebastian from Snowflakes... to keep me balanced, whichis a Good Thing!

"...wore TIES," not "Tuesday"!!!!!!!!!!!!
mb, although we could have worn ties on Tuesday...
"Well it looks like we made it thru the SOTU message without any direct hits."
Told ya. The Democrats are scared sh**less of gun control. It's dead, decapitated, buried and we peed on the grave.
So what we have to do now is:
1) Remain vigilant.
2) Don't panic. Cry wolf too often and people stop listening. Save your ammo for real threats.
3) Keep looking out for regulatory, rather than legislative, gun control. This is the new battlefield. It ticks me off that people will spread false rumors about UN treaties and other such nonsense, but when the ATF quietly shuts down FFL after FFL over bookkeeping minutia, we say nothing. Gun rights organizations have always been good about providing evocative statistics - I'm waiting for a stat which compares the percentage of guns unaccounted for by a de-licensed FFLs versus those unaccounted for in audits of ATF issue firearms.
Oh oh...wait one second...flash...this just in....
Yeah I thought we were out of the woods, but take a look at what John Lott just posted...Barry may have something up his sleaze, I mean sleeve. What did the Shakespeare used to say? "and now for the second act..."

You know, I wish you guys were right. I really do. The idea of the Democrats committing political suicide holds great appeal to me.

After reading the hubbub on the Judge 28, it occurred to me that Taurus may have done a VERY good job of fitting the gun RIGHT in between being an over .50 cal DD and an AOW SBS. Reading the regulations, they state that to be classified as a 'destructive device' it has to be over .50 caliber with a rifled barrel "intended to fire single rounds of ammunition". The Judge 28 IS rifled AND over .50, but the rifling is optimized for shot and there's no single shot ammunition it can chamber, that I know of. At the same time, it is a gun designed to fire shot, but is well under the limit of a SBS, but has a rifled barrel, thus fails the smoothbore classification of a shotgun. Very interesting.
As for the first comment on this, it was the ATFE from what I heard.
As for my take on the possibilities: http://cmblake6.wordpress.com/2011/02/01/this-was-not-necessarily-a-case-of-crying-wolf/
Besides which, I'm probably going to want one of those purely for the CANNON factor! The "OMG what IS that!" factor.
