And, PS...

...you're all right! The liklihood of me paying that Back at the Ranch prices for boots (even on "sale" for $895) is pretty much NUTS!

The Lucchese outlet on Marcy Street in Santa Flake has a great "scratch and dent" sale every May (no worse damage than I do to the boots in a week's wear). Good way to get high quality boots for little. Back at the Ranch is a flat-out ripoff, like much up there (I have an office there).

Michael,
Just got home from a trade show, and read your blogs on boots (which is one of the things I sell).
Thanks for buying American made boots! There are several really great companies that build boots in America Lucheese, is one along with Olathe, Anderson Bean, Rio's of Mercedes (the companies I rep), are made in Mercedes TX. Some of the Justin brands (Justin, Tony Lama, Nocona) are still made in El Paso.
A huge percentage of the footwear industry which used to be American based has moved to China, in large part because everyone wants to be able to buy lots of stuff cheap! Also American tanneries are enviornmentally responsible, which is not the case for most of the rest of the world, so procuring domestic hides for fine boots is more expensive. Realistically though leather is truly a world market.
There are some other American boot companies, and you are deep into the land of custom boot makers of which there are hundreds!
Just to clarify one poster felt that the Back at the Ranch boots weren't handmade and then described custom mades.
I sell handmade boots from Rios of Mercedes, and Anderson Bean in TX and each pair is built by a talented craftsman, with a blend of modern technology. Check out this video:
