A Few Days Off...

...will be back on-line rocking and rolling on Wednesday!

In the meantime, imagine the Democratic leadership on a tour of Iraq under their rules instead of Blackwater's rules...

"Hi, I'm a Democratic legislator and I wanted to aske you whether you"... BAM!

Interesting take on the other side of the issue (including some good links to follow) here:

As a libertarian I distrust police and mercenaries.

Frankly, I question the motives of mercenaries. Firms like Blackwater should be kept on a short leash....just like cops.

When I read the definition at Wikipedia, Blackwater does not come up as a "mercenary". Read the whole article.

Is there any reason to distrust "mercenaries" anymore than govt. soldiers? Perhaps not: http://volokh.com/posts/1191478287.shtml

I also have to remind you all of the terrific exchange re: the military draft between Milton Friedman and General William Westmoreland, then commander of all U.S. troops in Vietnam. In his testimony before the commission, Gen. Westmoreland said he did not want to command an army of mercenaries. Mr. Friedman interrupted, "General, would you rather command an army of slaves?" Mr. Westmoreland replied, "I don't like to hear our patriotic draftees referred to as slaves." Mr. Friedman then retorted, "I don't like to hear our patriotic volunteers referred to as mercenaries. If they are mercenaries, then I, sir, am a mercenary professor, and you, sir, are a mercenary general; we are served by mercenary physicians, we use a mercenary lawyer, and we get our meat from a mercenary butcher."

Don,
Blackwater is listed in the wiki entry for Mercs, but why don't you (or anyone else) think they are mercenaries? Is it that they're not part of a foreign army?
(from M-W.com : "one that serves merely for wages; especially : a soldier hired into foreign service")

The big difference I see is that they're held to a different set of standards than the military, and, unlike people in the military, they can quit.

Blackwater is getting screwed by democrats thatare looking to score points against Bush. The truth is ifany of the dems went to Iraq for a fact finding mission you know damn sure they'd want to be protected by Blackwater. It's kind of like guns. They don't want other to have them but it's OK if they own them. Kinda like Sen. Rockafeller and his AR-15 in DC.
