Obama Announces Move on New AWB

Here it comes...as Jim Shepherd and I predicted, Obama administration A.G. Eric Holder announced the Dems will move quickly for a new — and assumably permanent — AWB, this time under the guise of helping Mexico. From ABC News:
The Obama administration will seek to reinstate the assault weapons ban that expired in 2004 during the Bush administration, Attorney General Eric Holder said today.

Attorney General Eric Holder said that the Obama administration will seek to reinstitute the assault weapons ban which expired in 2004 during the Bush administration.

"As President Obama indicated during the campaign, there are just a few gun-related changes that we would like to make, and among them would be to reinstitute the ban on the sale of assault weapons," Holder told reporters.

Holder said that putting the ban back in place would not only be a positive move by the United States, it would help cut down on the flow of guns going across the border into Mexico, which is struggling with heavy violence among drug cartels along the border.

"I think that will have a positive impact in Mexico, at a minimum." Holder said at a news conference on the arrest of more than 700 people in a drug enforcement crackdown on Mexican drug cartels operating in the U.S
Since Holderr specifically did not announce a timetable on the new AWB, I'd say this is the first major "float" on the subject. We need to respond big time...let me consult with some friends in the media and industry, and on Monday we'll publish a list of "talking points" for your letters to your representatives in Congress.

I'm going to say this again, however...if you ever plan on owning a semiautomatic rifle buy it now!

For all who have said this would not happen and that the economy, etc., would consume BHO, please recognize whatever the assumptions you used...they were wrong. It's time to get on board and address this attack on the 2nd Ammendment.

I seem to remember folks saying he would be to busy to restart this crap again for quite a while

It's good to know the administration is so worried about the rights and safety of those folks from south of the border.

Michael, No one can say we didn't tell them this was coming. Now, they're moving on to Phase Two of the disarmament plan. Since no one screamed immediately at Holder, they figure this is a done deal.

Heaven knows we can't close the border, and no way can we shoot or arrest the dirtbags. So it's more in sorrow than in anger that we have to screw Mr. & Mrs. America. Can't be helped, doncha know.

'Course, we could end the War on Drugs instead...

I sent this to my wife today (the proud owner of her own pink-gripped S&W M&P9) and her reaction was nearly as violent as mine. We can't really afford our first AR right now but the Obama-nation is really telling us that we can't afford to not buy one.

I smell a trip to the SBG store after she gets off work... thank God for a tax refund this year. As exciting as it is to think about picking up our first "sporting rifle" I fear for what's to come. Civilian disarmament may never come, but I anticipate buying a half-dozen 30-rounders if we buy the rifle.

Please tell me the NRA is planning to combat this instead of rolling over in the wake of the Republican meltdown.

I am the NRA. I hope you are too. No offense intended, but if you aren't a member why are you waiting for somebody else to do the work for you? Please join, we need numbers to have the power.

On another note...Uncle Fudd, are you paying attention now?

Pelosi throws cold water on weapons ban

House Speaker Nancy Pelosi tossed cold water on the prospect of reinstating the assault weapons ban, highlighting Democrats’ reluctance to take on gun issues.

And we may see some REAL Bi-Partisan support of gun rights in this Congress if things get ugly. Remember not every Dem is a commie.

Boren to help lead new task force on gun rights

By JIM MYERS World Washington Bureau
Published: 2/25/2009 11:55 AM
Last Modified: 2/25/2009 11:56 AM

WASHINGTON -- U.S. Rep. Dan Boren, a board member of the National Rifle Association, announced Wednesday he will serve as co-chairman of a new task force on gun rights.

"I am afraid we could witness a significant tilt to the left on gun issues in the current climate in Washington and that has me greatly concerned,” the Oklahoma Democrat said.

I think Pelosi's "cold water" is just a maneuver to have the potential opponents stand down and go back to normal life so the ban can come back and get run through Congress as fast as the recent stimulus socialist spending bill. Run it through quickly enough and we will all come back from Thanksgiving vacation to find it was voted on in tandem emergency sessions Thanksgiving night while everyone was sleeping off the turkey dinner in front of the football game.
We who work behind the lines in the falsely named "blue states" (those governments want our freedom in a jar just as much as the "redcoats" did in 1776) have to pitch this to our commie representatives so that voting against the AWB is "for the people", not voting for it. Wish us all luck.

Lock and load folks. If you are waiting for the NRA to help forget it. They are just going to help write the bill for Obami.

i just want to know what moron in the government honestly believes that:
a - Mexico should have any bearing on MY rights.
b - Mexico's only source of firearms is the US.

i realize they're using that as an excuse to ban AW, but shouldn't they be worrying about saving the US, first, anyway?

The reason Pelosi threw Holder/Obammy under the bus is because she had already counted the votes and found that the bill would not pass. And presumably, now that the dimorat vote buying bill has passed, other bills will have to go thru the regular process. As such, there will be time to melt phone lines if anyone is stupid enough to bring up a new assault ban.

Anonymous said...

If these weapons the Mexican government are facing in the hands of the drug cartels are in fact fully automatic weapons, they are not buying them at gun shows and converting them (anyone want to turn my VW into an up-armored humvee using household hand tools and a pastry board?) or buying them for $2,000 and smuggling them across the border. I would bet that they are being stolen from the military there -- why should the corruption affecting the police miss the army?
But then, reason and logic always were strangers to the leftists.

George said...

I'm with the crowd that says Holder's comments were a trial balloon. And Pelosi's comments do reflect a genuine reluctance to try this now.

As for the reasons to do an AWB, don't bother wondering why they are valid. Go after the fact that this is a ban on a class of firearms that is commonly used for self defense. And don't even refer to hunting.

I have already contacted my senators and I will be contacting my congressmen/congresswomen tomorrow. We need to send an emphatic and clear statement that says to congress like if "you fuck with our rights, we are going to fuck you and make you like it.", but much more civil than that.....

For all of the conspiracy theorists out there that think the NRA has dropped the ball, or has not been representing us, including non-members, or thinks that the NRA is "going to help write the AWB" (!), are you F_______g insane? You sound like all of those that fell for Obama's campaign baloney and voted for him thinking that he'll fix the economy and not infringe on your God-given Rights! Now you're sorry. If you're not, you are insane.
Now, go join the NRA and the Second Amendment Foundation.
As far as talking points go, try these:
1. Gun-free areas, states and cities have higher crime.
2. States that have CPLs (Concealed Pistol Licenses) have lower crimes.
3. All guns have military roots, so any connection to them by looks and function IS expected.
4. As another writer has stated, the guns that are "featured" on the MSM news are full-auto's and ARE NOT available in the US for general sale. Thay are only available to LE and the military.
5. The commonly available semi-auto's that the "AWB" is targeting ARE NOT "assault weapons", as those are described in 4, above.
6. "Gun Control" isn't about guns, it's about "Control"!
7. Etc.; You know thw rest. Write them on a 3-by-5, for future reference.

If you want to mail or email your congress people, I have posted a sample letter here you can use:

http://americanmohist.blogspot.com/2009/02/fight-new-assault-weapon-ban.html

Mr. [Congress Person],

I am writing to you to oppose any gun control measures from the current administration. Specifically, I am opposing any thought of a new assault weapon ban.

Attorney General Holder recently said that, because of Mexico's current gun violence, the administration will propose a new, permanent assault weapon ban. That is an illogical conclusion. The reason Mexico is having gun problems is because Mexico chooses not to secure its own borders against gun traffickers. The BATF is assisting Mexico by investigating and arresting gun dealers who violate the law, and that is good. However, to conclude that we need to constrain the rights of law-abiding Americans because of the ineptitude of the Mexican government is simply absurd.

Moreover, the firearm industry is providing many well-paying manufacturing jobs in the United States, jobs that are disappearing from the rest of the economy. If you support the Assault Weapon Ban, you will be destroying well-paying manufacturing jobs in your district, deepening this recession. You will be contributing to your own electoral loss at the next election.

Thank you for your consideration,

[Insert Name]

If this information is correct, you'll forgive me for hijacking the thread:

Here is the reason that Hillary went to China:

HILLARY GRANTS EMINENT DOMAIN AS COLLATERAL TO CHINA FOR U.S. DEBTS!
« on: Today at 02:00:29 PM »

----
FEDS GRANT EMINENT DOMAIN AS COLLATERAL TO CHINA FOR U.S. DEBTS!
Beijing, China -- Sources at the United States Embassy in Beijing China have just CONFIRMED to me that the United States of America has tendered to China a written agreement which grants to the People's Republic of China, an option to exercise Eminent Domain within the USA, as collateral for China's continued purchase of US Treasury Notes and existing US Currency reserves!

The written agreement was brought to Beijing by Secretary of State Hillary Clinton and was formalized and agreed-to during her recent trip to China.

This means that in the event the US Government defaults on its financial obligations to China, the Communist Government of China would be permitted to physically take -- inside the USA -- land, buildings, factories, perhaps even entire cities - to satisfy the financial obligations of the US government.

Put simply, the feds have now actually mortgaged the physical land and property of all citizens and businesses in the United States. They have given to a foreign power, their Constitutional power to "take" all of our property, as actual collateral for continued Chinese funding of US deficit spending and the continued carrying of US national debt.

This is an unimaginable betrayal of every man, woman and child in the USA. An outrage worthy of violent overthrow.

I am endeavoring to obtain images or copies of the actual document but in the interim, several different sources both in the US and in China have CONFIRMED this to me.

More details as they become available. . . . . spread the word ASAP.

-------------- UPDATE 1:40 pm EST

Eminent Domain is the power of government to TAKE private property for public use without the consent of the property owner. Under our Constitution, the government can only "take" when providing "just compensation" for what they've taken.

Who decides what constitutes "just compensation?" The government!

Homeowners who felt the government was not paying them enough for property in past "takings" have filed lawsuits. In absolutely every such case, the value placed upon the property by the government was upheld by the courts.

Our federal government has now granted to China, this power to "take"our homes and businesses in the event the US Gov't defaults on its debts. Let's play this out as a worst case scenario. . . . . .

The US Gov't goes belly-up and China comes in and says, "they owed us $2 Trillion in Treasury Notes and another $2 Trillion in actual cash money which is now worthless. We are taking the entire state of Hawaii and the entire state of California in lieu of this bad debt. "

With the stroke of a Chinese chop stick, Hawaii and California -- all the land and buildings in those states -- are now owned by China.

The "taking" would be a "valid public use" because it was "taken" in payment of the public debt!!!!

China could then turn around and declare the value of all that land to be worth. . . . . I dunno, ten cents on a dollar?

For your $200,000 house, you get a Chinese check for $20,000.

Needless to say, the property owners would go ballistic and demand "just compensation" for what was taken. Who gets to decide what is "just?" China! Don't think you got a fair price for what they took? No problem, sue China.

You'll lose.

People who live in those states and own their land outright, might be able to negotiate with China to "rent" back their own property, as long as the property owner continued to pay all his taxes; but the land and buildings would belong to China!

This is what our own Government has just done to us and it is the single most vile act of betrayal in the history of human existence.

------------- SECOND UPDATE 3:48 PM

In early February nine U.S. States began the process of re-asserting their Sovereignty pursuant to the Ninth and Tenth Amendments to the US Constitution; declaring null and void any actions by Congress that violated the Constitution.

At the time, I wrote about those state efforts (Here) and wondered why so many states were taking-up such an arcane issue in such a seemingly urgent fashion. I guess now, we know why.

The states were obviously privy to what the feds were planning to do with granting Eminent Domain to China. The states took action to make certain the feds couldn't give away cities or the states themselves!

This situation is going to get VERY ugly, VERY fast as one sovereign power (the feds) try to literally give away the land of other sovereign powers, (the states). This is the type of thing that starts Civil War.

Our present federal government makes the treachery and betrayal of Benedict Arnold look like child's play.

Jebus ... do you far right ghost-dancers ever learn a new note to play?

You were spewing this foreign nation eminent domain crap during the Bush mk.I admin when his NWO speeches were setting you loons off.

Yes ... when the government wants to borrow more money, they make all sorts of dumbass promises.

Here is a simple clue: When the interest from past administration's borrowing gets higher than revenues, the current admin simply defaults. No foreign foreclosures, nothing. When the WTO tries that in third world crap-holes, the rioting and civil violence they cause forces these bankers to flee the country.

I doubt that China or anyone else would even consider trying such with a nuclear armed nation.

You want to prevent these foreign loans? Start advocating deliberate default. That will scare off these "investors" faster than anything. No new foreign paper = no more money for congress to piss away.

I'm sure the AWB is already written. They'll just wait the timing of the next mass killing (in a no-gun zone, for sure) and the complacent media will spew typical propaganda that will be sucked up by the masses. Even George HW recinded his NRA Life Membership after one such incident.
