Critical (and Stupid) Fashion Question

Okay, I need some critical fashion advice here. First quarter 2008 I'll start filming new episodes of SG and DOWN RANGE videos for the next year.

For the last 7 seasons, I've been a Tactical Slut, wearing gear from Sig-Tac. When I started wearing the stuff, I was the only guy who didn't dress in Safari Slut-wear, as in, "I say, James, could you please have the wog hand me the Purdy?"

Now everybody on three networks is in Tactical Slut-wear, and I'm thinking I need a change. I did get one of the Wilderness Tactical Sonoran shirts, which is like post-modern tactical slut-wear, for Christmas and I got to thinking that might rock with the SG and DR logos embroidered on.

I may have some embroidered up for SHOT and wear them to parties. I suppose I could always go to one of the Cabela's canvas shirts or something from Duluth Trading...I don't know.

What do you think?

Time to double back on them with The Full English from Orvis. Tweed knee pants, vest, tie and shooting jacket, with maybe a little tweed cap to finish it off.

Of course, you would need a 'Miami vice' type double shoulder holster rig under the coat, just to prove you hadn't sold out.

Huh, I thought he should wear the outfits from Miami Vice. (Tie-less suits or whatever they are called.)

Michael, How about suiting-up in a variety of menswear. Try sport coats for "On the road", your new-found casual shirts for some shows, Woolrich for othwers, Cabelas for others, etc. Since carrying is commonplace, and NO ONE wears tactical stuff in public, wearing what "normal" guys wear would be a pleasant switch.
Oh, an lose the earing! (Said with all due respect!)

Any fashion advise I would give you would have you fast tracked to Mr Blackwell's worst dressed list.

I do remember with Granamals you were suposed to wear tigers with tigers, zebras with zebras.

I hope that helps.

Frankly, I'm sick of anything "tactical" and that most certainly includes clothes. How about some bib overalls and a chambry work shirt?

Michael;

Leave the earring, it's you.

As for the clothing... Tactical mumu?

(I actually second the call for wearing what WE wear, which is generally not $50 5.11 tacticool stuff that screams "I be packin!"

Take some tips from Suarez.

C'mon. "Leave the earring, it's you."? Yeah, like pearl "handles" on a 1911. Remember what George S. Patton said about those.

Good call on the change. Time to switch to what normal people wear all the time. Let the other wannabe show hosts dress in their tacticool best to pose as real 'operators'. Just no beret like the guy in Mythbusters please.

Wait wait...

what if I got a "raspberry beret...the kind you find in a second hand store..."

It'd have to be purple, of course!

Been a long time since I did any Prince jokes!

Since my job doesn't involve being on TV, and the fact I'm nearing 60 - I don't give a crap what others think of how I dress (and, yes, I'm married).
I dress for comfort, including how comfortably my Sig rides on my hip in the VM II holster.

Aside from screaming "GUN!" the other big problem with tacticool clothing is the outfit that, for example, Tom or Mas wear on TV can cost as much as the carry gun.

$60 for 5.11 pants
$60 for the SigTac shirt.
$125 for the vest
$100 for the Blackhawk boots
$100 for the belt + pouches
$60 for the holster
= $505, which is the exact same OTD I paid for my XD45.

I look at Clint as a good example of what we're talking about.

Ordinary hiking-type shoes, Dickies pants, and an ordinary button down shirt. I don't even want to guess the age of his wheelgun IWB he usually wears.

Heck, the BladeTech OWB and mag pouch probably cost more than the outfit.

My .2 cents, spend them as you wish.

Heck Michael: I thought you had finally realized the same as I and that is that old fat guys look better in button up shirst to hide our trophy bellys.

JM24, your prices are a little off.
Try:
Holster: $210
Pouch: $90
Belt $135

That's for Mitch Rosen Leather. One of Mas' favorite holster suppliers.
When I order replacement gear from Mitch, that's what it will cost. My original ARG is still good after 13 yrs.

Will;

I was thinking of Tom's Kydex/Wilderness belt combo.

While Mitch Rosen does push the total higher, you do get what you pay for.

Have to agree with some other posters.. lose the earring.

As for dress I'm torn between just wearing what the people around you are wearing (cowboy stuff at a cowboy match, Levis' and t-shirt at an IPSC match, sports coat and slacks when appropriate) or wearing some sort of distinctive "uniform" to make you stand out in any venue.

Unless you are filming in a place that has reciprocity with Colorado you are probably not "packing" so thats not an issue. Besides most ranges are "cold ranges" so they would probably prefer that you not carry.

But, PLEASE shorten that opening sequence of your program(s)! We would much prefer to see content rather than the same old "song and dance". Realize you need some sort of introduction but perhaps you have a little too much.

I don't know if this is tacticool or not - I hope not - but I have this great shirt from Cabela's Outfitter's Series. It is a heavy poplin with metal snap buttons and a bi-fold shoulder. The shoulders give me total freedom of movement. I love it. I don't think they sell it anymore which is a shame.
