Name That Gun!

This is a quiz for the regular readers, with a special poke-in-the-ribs for Brother Sweeney and Farmer Frank James, our two resident wheel gun experts. Identify the Smith & Wesson revolver in the above picture.

Here are the hints:

It's an N-Frame
• It's in .38 Special

The winner gets an D-LUX INVITATION FOR THE RESERVED SHOOTING GALLERY SECTION (near the restrooms, out in the hallway) to the Outdoor Channel Mega-Party at SHOT!

Is it a 38/44 Heavy Duty?

Nice try, Brian, but — BUUUUUZZZZ!!! — wrong answer!

I like "Billy," though — could be male , female or poodle.

Hmm, looks like a .38/40 Target, humpback hammer, five-screw, with a 27/28 barrel screwed into it.

S&W .38/44 Outdoorsman

Michael: it looks to me you've got a pre-war commercial frame (not a military frame) that has been milled and fitted with a relatively modern or well-post-war adjustable sight. The barrel is not a stock Model 27 barrel because it meets the frame exactly at the top front edge, so either the barrel has been milled down(shaved?)or someone found a pre-war .38/44 Outdoorsman barrel. If you hadn't of given the hint it was in .38 Special I would have guessed it was a 'special' .44 Special from Hamilton Bowen, but then I figure the whole thing is the product of either Hamilton or Clements. How close did I come?

The .38 Special was introduced in 1899 as an improvement over the .38 Long Colt which, as a military service cartridge, was found to have inadequate stopping power against the wooden shields of charging Moros during the Philippine-American War!!22dd
